Test drove this van , started up alright and then drove it up the road, however when warmed up started blowing plumes of white smoke out, this indicates that a head gasket fault is present on this van

Simple, uncomplicated vehicle with excellent economy. Build quality is ok, but there are better. It has most things I would want, as do it’s’non-biological triplets’, the Relay and Ducato and the Relay.

Peugeot Boxer (2006-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Impressive load space and payload | Rivals are more refined and better to drive |
| Economical 2.2-litre diesel | Some gearbox issues with older used models |
| Well equipped | Electric version won't go far on a charge |
Quick Summary
The Peugeot Boxer is a large van available in multiple configurations, including panel van, crew van, and window van variants. Introduced in 2006 as a collaboration with Fiat and Citroën, it marked a significant improvement over its predecessor with enhanced practicality, economical HDi diesel engines, and modern safety equipment. The Boxer offers impressive load space with payloads ranging from 1,125kg to 1,870kg and load lengths from 2,670mm to 4,070mm. Three wheelbase options—short, medium, and long—provide flexibility for different needs. The rear doors open 180 degrees, with a 270-degree option available, whilst the wide space between wheel arches accommodates larger loads. Interior practicality is excellent, featuring two gloveboxes, numerous cubby holes, and comfortable seating for three up front.
Current models feature one of two 2.2-litre BlueHDi diesel engines: the base BlueHDi 120 S&S produces 118bhp and 310lb ft of torque, whilst the BlueHDi 140 S&S outputs 138bhp and 340lb ft. Both pair with a six-speed manual gearbox. Fuel economy averages 25.5-36.0mpg depending on configuration, with a 90-litre tank providing approximately 495 miles per tank. The Boxer is manoeuvrable with light steering and good forward visibility, making it practical in tight spaces. However, the underlying age shows in its rough suspension and lack of handling finesse compared to newer rivals. A recently launched electric version offers smoother, quieter operation but has limited range, suiting local trips and last-mile deliveries rather than long-haul transport. Peugeot offers fixed-price service plans up to five years, with servicing required every two years or 32,000 miles under normal use.
Best for: Businesses and operators needing large load capacity, impressive payload, and economical running costs; those prioritising practicality and configurability over driving refinement.
Not ideal for: Operators requiring long-haul capability with the electric version; those seeking the refinement and driving dynamics of newer competitors like the Ford Transit or Volkswagen Crafter.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Peugeot Boxer | 3/5 | 3.7/5 | 28.1% | 4.0/5 |
| Ford Transit | 4/5 | 4.6/5 | 31.2% | 4.4/5 |
| Nissan NV400 | 4/5 | 4.4/5 | 33.5% | 4.2/5 |
| Vauxhall Movano | 4/5 | 4.4/5 | 44.3% | 4.2/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Boxer if: You need impressive load space and payload capacity, seek economical running costs, or prioritise practicality and configurability over driving refinement.
Consider alternatives if: You require the refinement and driving dynamics of newer competitors, need long-haul capability with an electric van, or prefer more modern technology and comfort features.
Competitive Position: The Peugeot Boxer remains a competitively economical option with many versions offering claimed average fuel economy of up to 36mpg. Despite its age, it still delivers substantial load space, payload capacity, equipment, adaptability, and configurability. However, newer rivals such as the Ford Transit, Nissan NV400, and Vauxhall Movano are more modern, refined, and better to drive. Peugeot's updates and revisions—particularly the 2.2-litre BlueHDi engines meeting modern emissions regulations—help keep the Boxer in contention. If you're satisfied with its driving characteristics and performance, the Boxer remains a sensible purchase for large van requirements.
