Renault Scenic (2016-2019) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Efficient engines mean low running costs | Not as spacious as you'd hope |
| More stylish than most traditional MPVs | Dull to drive |
| Impressive safety rating. | Build quality less than impressive. |
Quick Summary
The Renault Scenic (2016-2019) is the fourth generation of the pioneering mini-MPV, offering a visually striking exterior with SUV-like elements and enormous 20-inch wheels. While the interior features a smart touchscreen and ample storage, the quality of plastics declines further down, suggesting cost-cutting. Despite its MPV roots, practicality is compromised by a high floor that makes rear seating less comfortable and rear seats that are less versatile than rivals, only folding in a conventional 60/40 split.
On the road, the Scenic's large wheels and soft suspension lead to a wallowy ride and numb steering, making it dull to drive, though it generally smothers bumps well. Engines, even the most potent, can feel underpowered, especially with a full load. Running costs are a strong point, with efficient diesel options (up to 65mpg for the rare Hybrid Assist, 60mpg for the 108bhp diesel) and competitive service pricing. Most engines feature maintenance-free timing chains, except for the 1.5-litre dCi 110. Despite its stylish exterior and good safety rating, the Scenic struggles to offer the practicality or engaging drive of its rivals, making it a car that prioritises looks over substance.
Best for: Drivers prioritising stylish looks over outright practicality, those seeking efficient engines and low running costs, or buyers valuing a strong safety rating.
Not ideal for: Buyers needing maximum interior space and versatility, those who enjoy an engaging driving experience, or anyone expecting premium interior build quality throughout.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Renault Scenic | 3/5 | 4.6/5 | 38.5% | 4.0/5 |
| Volkswagen Touran | 4/5 | 4.8/5 | 32.2% | 4.3/5 |
| Citroen C4 Picasso | 4/5 | 4.9/5 | 43.1% | 4.4/5 |
| Ford C-Max | 4/5 | 4.7/5 | 30.2% | 4.2/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Scenic if: You prioritise a stylish MPV with efficient engines, low running costs, and a good safety rating, and are willing to compromise on ultimate practicality and driving engagement.
Consider alternatives if: You need maximum interior space and versatility, desire an engaging driving experience, or expect consistently high-quality interior materials.
Competitive Position: The Renault Scenic (2016-2019) stands out with its striking design and efficient powertrains, offering competitive running costs and a strong safety record. However, it falls short of rivals in terms of interior practicality, rear seat versatility, and driving dynamics. While it's a visually appealing option for those seeking a stylish family car, buyers prioritising spaciousness, a more engaging drive, or consistent interior quality may find better all-rounders among its competitors.

4.6 Overall rating
(9 reviews)Great car. Durable and reliable. Good for everyday commuting
I cannot believe that the car is 15yrs old, it looks brand new as though it has just come off the showroom floor. Many thanks. I love it
Absolutely love this car. Has everything we need from a large boot, sat nav, picnic tables in the back etc! Was definitely what we needed for our family!
Dashboard unlike any other car I like it rest of car similar to Ford Cmax! Centre console area lets it down slightly.
The car was top notch beautiful condition great to drive . Don’t know what to compare it to as I have no experience of similar cars.
