Renault Scenic (2016-2019) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Efficient engines mean low running costs | Not as spacious as you'd hope |
| More stylish than most traditional MPVs | Dull to drive |
| Impressive safety rating. | Build quality less than impressive. |
Quick Summary
The Renault Scenic (2016-2019) is a compact MPV that blends family practicality with distinctive SUV-like styling, featuring large 20-inch wheels to set it apart. Inside, it boasts a smart interior with a prominent touchscreen and numerous storage cubbies. However, its practicality is somewhat compromised by a high floor that can make rear seating less comfortable, and the rear seats offer less versatility than some rivals. Interior build quality can also feel inconsistent, with some cheaper plastics evident.
On the road, the Scenic's soft suspension and large wheels result in a wallowy ride and noticeable body roll, making it less engaging to drive. Engines, even the more powerful options, can feel strained, particularly with a full load. Running costs are a strong point, with diesel models achieving up to 60mpg (the rare Hybrid Assist can exceed 65mpg) and petrol versions typically returning 40-45mpg. Most engines benefit from timing chains, reducing maintenance, and Renault offers competitive servicing plans for older vehicles.
Best for: Drivers prioritising distinctive style, strong safety ratings, and low running costs in a family vehicle.
Not ideal for: Buyers requiring class-leading practicality, an engaging driving experience, or consistently high interior material quality.
Comparison vs Key Rivals

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Renault Scenic | 3/5 | 4.6/5 | 38.4% | 4.0/5 |
| Volkswagen Touran | 4/5 | 4.8/5 | 33.6% | 4.3/5 |
| Citroen C4 Picasso | 4/5 | 4.9/5 | 55.1% | 4.4/5 |
| Ford C-Max | 4/5 | 4.7/5 | 31.7% | 4.2/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Scenic if: You prioritise distinctive style, strong safety ratings, and low running costs in a family vehicle.
Consider alternatives if: You require class-leading practicality, an engaging driving experience, or consistently high interior material quality.
Competitive Position: The Renault Scenic (2016-2019) attempts to blend MPV practicality with crossover style, offering a visually appealing package with good fuel efficiency and safety. However, its bold design choices, particularly the large wheels and high floor, compromise interior space and driving dynamics, making it less practical and engaging than many rivals. While it shines in running costs and safety, competitors often provide a more balanced and versatile family car experience, positioning the Scenic as a choice for those who value aesthetics and economy over ultimate utility and driving pleasure.

4.6 Overall rating
(9 reviews)Great car. Durable and reliable. Good for everyday commuting
I cannot believe that the car is 15yrs old, it looks brand new as though it has just come off the showroom floor. Many thanks. I love it
Absolutely love this car. Has everything we need from a large boot, sat nav, picnic tables in the back etc! Was definitely what we needed for our family!
Dashboard unlike any other car I like it rest of car similar to Ford Cmax! Centre console area lets it down slightly.
The car was top notch beautiful condition great to drive . Don’t know what to compare it to as I have no experience of similar cars.
