Renault Scenic (2016-2019) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Efficient engines mean low running costs	Not as spacious as you'd hope
More stylish than most traditional MPVs	Dull to drive
Impressive safety rating	Build quality less than impressive

Quick Summary

The Renault Scenic (2016-2019) is a stylish compact MPV that attempts to bridge the gap between traditional people carriers and modern crossovers. With swoopy styling, muscular detailing, and enormous 20-inch wheels, it certainly looks the part and may tempt buyers away from SUVs. Inside, there's a smart-looking interior centred around a large touchscreen with generous storage throughout. However, the Scenic falls short in practicality; the raised floor reduces legroom, making occupants feel cramped, and the rear seats lack individual movement and versatility compared to rivals.

On the road, the Scenic prioritises comfort over engagement, with soft suspension that smooths out most bumps but results in excessive body roll in corners. The numb steering and wallowy handling make it uninviting to drive with enthusiasm, whilst the gutless engines struggle under load, particularly when fully laden. Running costs are competitive, with efficient diesel engines achieving 50-65mpg and a five-star safety rating providing reassurance. Available in four trim levels from Expression to Signature Nav, all come well-equipped with alloy wheels, cruise control, and dual-zone climate control as standard. Maintenance costs are reasonable, with most engines featuring timing chains rather than belts.

Best for: Families seeking a stylish, affordable MPV with low running costs and strong safety credentials, particularly those prioritising exterior aesthetics.

Not ideal for: Buyers requiring maximum interior space, those who enjoy engaging driving dynamics, or those expecting premium build quality throughout.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Scenic if: You're seeking a stylish, affordable MPV with low running costs and strong safety credentials, particularly if exterior aesthetics are a priority.

Consider alternatives if: You require maximum interior space, enjoy engaging driving dynamics, or expect premium build quality throughout the cabin.

Competitive Position: The Renault Scenic (2016-2019) occupies an interesting position in the compact MPV market, offering distinctive styling and competitive running costs. However, it struggles against better-rounded rivals. The Volkswagen Touran and Ford C-Max both score higher with experts and offer superior practicality, whilst the Citroën C4 Picasso matches the Scenic's user appeal with a higher expert rating. The Scenic's main strength lies in its value proposition and low running costs, making it an attractive option for budget-conscious families prioritising style over substance. For those seeking a more versatile, engaging, or solidly built MPV, competitors offer stronger all-round packages.
