Renault Trafic (2014-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Efficient engine range	Maximum payloads beaten by some rivals
Modern styling	A bit basic inside
Excellent value for money	Not as car-like to drive as a VW Transporter

Quick Summary

The Renault Trafic (2014-present) is a versatile and hard-working commercial van that has served countless purposes over its 40-year history. The current third generation, refreshed in 2019, combines modern styling with practical functionality, offering a range of body styles and configurations to suit various needs. Inside, the cabin feels contemporary with switchgear and technology influenced by Renault's passenger car range, though some plastics feel scratchy. The van features a mobile office setup in higher trims, with a folding front middle seat revealing a quasi-desk, making it ideal for professionals on the move.

Powered by a single 2.0-litre dCi turbodiesel engine available in three power outputs (120, 145, and 170bhp), the Trafic delivers impressive efficiency and refinement. The entry-level 120 returns up to 52.3mpg, whilst the most powerful 170 achieves 48.1mpg, both aided by standard stop/start technology. An optional smooth EDC automatic gearbox is available alongside the standard six-speed manual. Whilst the driving experience doesn't quite match the Volkswagen Transporter's car-like feel, the Trafic excels in comfort over longer journeys and offers exceptional value, starting at just over £30,000 new. Service intervals of 24,000 miles or two years provide peace of mind for long-term ownership.

Best for: Budget-conscious buyers seeking a hard-working van with modern styling, professionals needing mobile office functionality, and those prioritising fuel efficiency and comfort on longer journeys.

Not ideal for: Operators requiring maximum payload capacity, buyers wanting a premium interior finish, or those seeking the most car-like driving dynamics available in the commercial van sector.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Trafic if: You're seeking a hard-working van with modern styling, need mobile office functionality, prioritise fuel efficiency and comfort, or want exceptional value for money.

Consider alternatives if: You require maximum payload capacity, desire a premium interior finish, or seek the most car-like driving dynamics in the commercial van sector.

Competitive Position: The Renault Trafic (2014-present) is a compelling choice in the commercial van market, offering excellent value and modern practicality. Whilst the Volkswagen Transporter T6 provides superior car-like driving dynamics and the Ford Transit Custom delivers greater payload capacity, the Trafic strikes an impressive balance between affordability, efficiency, and functionality. The Vauxhall Vivaro offers comparable features, but the Trafic's modern refresh, smooth automatic gearbox option, and exceptional value proposition make it a highly sensible choice for budget-conscious operators and professionals alike.
