Renault Trafic (2014-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Efficient engine range	Maximum payloads beaten by some rivals
Modern styling	A bit basic inside
Excellent value for money	Not as car-like to drive as a VW Transporter

Quick Summary

The Renault Trafic (2014-present) is a versatile, hard-working commercial van that has served countless purposes over its 40-year history. The current third generation, refreshed in 2019, combines modern styling with practical functionality, offering a plethora of body styles and configurations to suit various needs. Inside, the cabin feels contemporary with switchgear and technology influenced by Renault's passenger car range, though tough plastics keep costs down. The van features a mobile office setup in higher trims, with a folding front middle seat revealing a quasi desk, alongside clever storage solutions and optional bulkheads and lashing points.

Powered by a single 2.0-litre dCi turbodiesel engine in three states of tune (120, 145, and 170bhp), the Trafic delivers impressive refinement and frugality, with the entry-level 120 returning up to 52.3mpg and the powerful 170 achieving 48.1mpg. An optional smooth EDC automatic gearbox complements the standard six-speed manual. Whilst the light steering excels in town, it feels vague at speed, and the suspension, though comfortable, allows noticeable body roll when empty. Service intervals of 24,000 miles or two years, combined with affordable pricing starting just over £30,000 new, make the Trafic an excellent value proposition for those seeking a practical, comfortable workhorse without premium pricing.

Best for: Budget-conscious buyers seeking a hard-working van with modern styling, comfort on longer journeys, and excellent fuel economy; those needing multiple configuration options and clever storage solutions.

Not ideal for: Buyers prioritising maximum payload capacity, premium interior finishes, or the most car-like driving experience comparable to a VW Transporter.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Trafic if: You're seeking a hard-working van with modern styling, comfort on longer journeys, excellent fuel economy, and multiple configuration options at an affordable price point.

Consider alternatives if: You require maximum payload capacity, premium interior finishes, or the most car-like driving experience comparable to a VW Transporter.

Competitive Position: The Renault Trafic (2014-present) stands as a strong contender in the commercial van market, offering exceptional value for money and impressive fuel efficiency. Whilst it may not match the VW Transporter for premium feel or the Ford Transit Custom for maximum payload, its combination of modern styling, practical configurations, comfortable long-distance capability, and affordable pricing makes it an excellent choice for budget-conscious buyers. The smooth automatic gearbox and frugal diesel engines further enhance its appeal as a practical, hard-working workhorse that doesn't compromise on everyday comfort and convenience.
