Seat Ateca (2016-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Well equipped	Warranty protection not as long as for Kia or Hyundai
Fun to drive	Base 1.0-litre petrol engine can be a bit breathless
Spacious for people and luggage	Ride firmer than with some rivals

Quick Summary

The Seat Ateca (2016-present) is Seat's sporty take on the mid-size SUV, sharing major components with the Volkswagen Tiguan and Skoda Karoq. It combines stylish design with an engaging driving experience, offering sharp steering, excellent body control, and spirited turbocharged engines that deliver impressive performance across the range. The 510-litre boot provides competitive cargo space, whilst the five-seat interior comfortably accommodates adults, though some rivals offer slightly more rear legroom. Well-equipped from the base model with automatic city braking and pedestrian detection, higher trims add climate control, touchscreen infotainment with satnav, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto.

Running costs are reasonable, with diesel engines achieving up to 65.7mpg and petrol variants delivering creditable economy figures. Service costs are fixed-price and competitive, whilst the Ateca earned a five-star EuroNCAP safety rating. The only trade-offs are a slightly firmer ride than some competitors and a shorter warranty than Korean rivals. As a used buy, the Ateca represents excellent value, combining practicality, performance, and reliability. It was named overall Car of the Year in the 2019 CarGurus Best Used Car Awards, reflecting its status as one of the best mid-size SUVs available.

Best for: Drivers seeking a stylish, engaging SUV with excellent handling, good equipment levels, and strong performance across a range of engines, plus families wanting practicality without sacrificing driving enjoyment.

Not ideal for: Buyers prioritising maximum rear legroom, the longest warranty protection, or the softest ride quality, or those seeking the absolute lowest running costs.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Ateca if: You want a stylish, engaging SUV with excellent handling, good equipment levels, and strong performance, or you're seeking a practical family vehicle that doesn't compromise on driving enjoyment.

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise maximum rear legroom, the longest warranty protection, the softest ride quality, or the absolute lowest running costs.

Competitive Position: The Seat Ateca is a strong mid-size SUV that excels in driving dynamics and equipment, though it faces stiff competition from its Volkswagen Group siblings. The Volkswagen Tiguan and Skoda Karoq both score higher on expert and user ratings, whilst the Nissan Qashqai offers comparable user satisfaction. However, the Ateca's sporty character, engaging handling, and well-rounded practicality make it an excellent choice for buyers seeking an SUV that's genuinely fun to drive. Its popularity has kept resale values high, so finding a bargain requires diligent searching, but the effort is worthwhile for one of the market's best mid-size SUVs.
