Seat Ateca (2016-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |

| Fun to drive | Base 1.0-litre petrol engine can be a bit breathless |
| Spacious for people and luggage | Ride firmer than with some rivals |
Quick Summary
The Seat Ateca (2016-present) is Seat's take on the Volkswagen Tiguan and shares major components with its sister brands, including the Skoda Karoq. Marketed as the sporty choice within the Volkswagen Group, the Ateca features sharper styling and an edgier driving experience. With a competitive 510-litre boot (485 litres for four-wheel drive versions) and comfortable seating for five, it offers practical family SUV credentials. The interior is well-equipped, with even base models featuring automatic city braking and pedestrian detection as standard, whilst higher trims include climate control, touchscreen infotainment with satnav, DAB radio, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Blessed with spirited performance from a range of turbocharged diesel and petrol engines, the Ateca feels neither underpowered nor out of its depth on the motorway. Most versions feel positively sprightly, whilst the hot Cupra variant delivers hot-hatch performance. All Atecas are enjoyable to drive with excellent grip, neat body control and sharp steering, making it one of the best-handling cars of its type. Fuel economy is respectable, with the 1.6 TDI Ecomotive diesel achieving around 65.7mpg and the 1.4 TSI petrol around 52.3mpg. Running costs are reasonable, with fixed-price servicing from £175 for minor services and £295 for major ones.
Best for: Drivers seeking a stylish, fun-to-drive mid-size SUV with excellent practicality, good equipment levels, and strong handling characteristics, particularly those who value sporty performance. Not ideal for: Buyers prioritising maximum warranty protection (like Korean rivals) or those seeking the softest ride quality, or those relying solely on the base 1.0-litre petrol engine with heavy loads.

The Verdict
You should buy the Ateca if: You're seeking a stylish, fun-to-drive mid-size SUV with excellent practicality, good equipment levels, and strong handling characteristics, particularly if you value sporty performance. Consider alternatives if: You prioritise maximum warranty protection like Korean rivals, seek the softest ride quality, or plan to rely solely on the base 1.0-litre petrol engine with heavy loads. Competitive Position: The Seat Ateca (2016-present) is a strong contender in the mid-size SUV market, offering stylish design, engaging driving dynamics, and practical family-friendly features. Whilst the Volkswagen Tiguan and Skoda Karoq score slightly higher with expert and user ratings, the Ateca remains an excellent choice for those prioritising fun-to-drive characteristics and value. It sits comfortably alongside the Nissan Qashqai as a well-rounded option, though it edges ahead with superior handling and a more engaging driving experience. High resale values reflect its popularity, making it a worthwhile investment for those seeking a premium mid-size SUV experience at a competitive price point.

3.8 Overall rating
(4 reviews)Reversing camera as standard. Everything else seems fine. It is the FR model I have.
The ateca is a very nice car to drive. Better than most in this category.
Very practical and comfortable yet pleasurable to drive . Better value than the Karoq andVolvo XC 40 and better quality than other SUVs
A hard ride with a lot of tyre noise and it was hard to keep the car straight on a potholed road. Very unimpressed by the combination of automatic gearbox and stop/start as these two seemed to fight each other at almost every junction or roundabout, with the engine shuddering to a stop then immediately re-starting. A pity as my old Seat Alhambra is a dream to drive and has been faultless over the last 6 years,
