Skoda Citigo (2012-2020) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Better value than a VW Up	Interior not as posh as VW Up's
Fun yet comfortable to drive	Equipment can feel a little basic
Cheap to run	Limited performance

Quick Summary

The Skoda Citigo (2012-2020) is one of the best small cars available on the used market, offering excellent value, practicality, and reliability. Available in both three- and five-door variants, it provides comfortable seating for four adults with a 251-litre boot offering plenty of space for luggage or a light buggy. The rear seats split and fold, and optional variable boot floor adds versatility. With a light steering action and easy-to-use controls, the Citigo is brilliantly wieldy around town, riding comfortably and handling securely despite its modest 1.0-litre engine options of 59bhp or 74bhp.

Running costs are exceptionally low, with fuel economy of 45-50mpg and insurance rated between groups 2 and 4. Road tax is free for cars registered before 31 March 2017. The electric Citigo-e iV, launched in 2019, offers up to 161 miles of range with a 36.8kWh battery and rapid charging capability, though used prices remain high. Safety is excellent with a five-star Euro NCAP rating and optional autonomous emergency braking. Whilst the interior lacks the premium feel of the VW Up and equipment can be basic on lower trims, the Citigo represents outstanding value for money as a fun, practical, and efficient small car.

Best for: Budget-conscious buyers seeking a practical, reliable, and fun small car; those wanting low running costs; and buyers interested in an affordable used electric vehicle (Citigo-e iV).

Not ideal for: Those prioritising premium interior quality or extensive equipment; drivers needing strong performance; or buyers seeking a three-person rear bench seat.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Citigo if: You're on a budget seeking a practical, reliable, and fun small car; you want exceptionally low running costs; or you're interested in an affordable used electric vehicle (Citigo-e iV).

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise premium interior quality, extensive equipment, strong performance, or require a three-person rear bench seat.

Competitive Position: The Skoda Citigo (2012-2020) is one of the strongest contenders in the used city car market, offering outstanding value compared to rivals like the VW Up. Whilst the Hyundai i10 and Ford Fiesta Mk6 score slightly higher overall, the Citigo matches them on practicality and comfort whilst undercutting on price. The Toyota Aygo offers similar value but lacks the Citigo's refinement and driving engagement. For budget-conscious buyers seeking a fun, practical, and efficient small car with low running costs, the Citigo represents exceptional value and remains one of the best used buys in its class.
