Skoda Citigo (2012-2020) Pros and Cons

Pros Cons
Better value than a VW Up Interior not as posh as VW Up's
Fun yet comfortable to drive Equipment can feel a little basic
Cheap to run Limited performance

Quick Summary

The Skoda Citigo (2012-2020) is a practical, affordable, and enjoyable city car from the Volkswagen Group. Available in three- and five-door variants, it offers surprising spaciousness for its size with a 251-litre boot and clever storage solutions. The standard 1.0-litre MPI petrol engine comes in 59bhp or 74bhp variants with a five-speed manual gearbox, delivering light steering and easy handling that makes it brilliantly wieldy in town. The car rides comfortably and feels planted, offering a 'big car' feel despite its compact dimensions.

Running costs are exceptionally low, with fuel economy around 45-50mpg, minimal insurance costs (groups 2-4), and free road tax for pre-March 2017 models. Servicing is affordable, though a cambelt replacement every three years or 30,000 miles should be factored in. In 2019, Skoda introduced the electric Citigo-e iV with a 36.8kWh battery offering up to 161 miles of range, making it the cheapest five-door EV in the UK at launch. Used electric examples hold value exceptionally well. The Citigo represents outstanding value compared to its VW Up sibling, combining practicality, reliability, and efficiency at the lowest possible cost.

Best for: Budget-conscious buyers seeking a fun, practical, and economical city car; those wanting excellent value compared to premium alternatives; and drivers interested in affordable electric motoring (Citigo-e iV).

Not ideal for: Buyers prioritising premium interior quality, those needing high performance, or those seeking a three-person rear bench seat.

The Verdict

You should buy the Citigo if: You're seeking outstanding value, a fun and comfortable city car, low running costs, or an affordable electric option (Citigo-e iV).

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise premium interior quality, require high performance, or need a three-person rear bench seat.

Competitive Position: The Skoda Citigo (2012-2020) is one of the best small cars available on the used market, offering exceptional value compared to its VW Up sibling. Whilst the Toyota Aygo and Hyundai i10 offer alternative options, the Citigo combines practicality, comfort, and affordability in a package that's hard to beat. Its fun-to-drive character, low running costs, and clever storage make it an outstanding choice for budget-conscious buyers. The electric Citigo-e iV variant also represents an excellent entry point into affordable electric motoring, though used prices remain high. Overall, the Citigo delivers low-cost motoring at its finest.

Customers say

The Skoda Citigo is well-regarded for its value, ease of driving, and comfort, making it ideal for new drivers. Owners like its spacious feel despite its compact size and commend its fuel efficiency. However, some drivers do mention that the engine lacks power, making it feel underwhelming at times. Overall, it combines practicality with economical driving, although performance can be a concern for those seeking more power.

I no longer needed a Chelsea Tractor. The Citigo has enough features, is not over complicated, it is easy to drive , comfortable and economical. This is my fourth Skoda ( each a different model ). Need I say no more ?
