Skoda Citigo (2012-2020) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Better value than a VW Up	Interior not as posh as VW Up's
Fun yet comfortable to drive	Equipment can feel a little basic
Cheap to run	Limited performance

Quick Summary

The Skoda Citigo (2012-2020) is one of the best small city cars available on the used market. Offered in both three- and five-door variants, it delivers excellent practicality for its size with a 251-litre boot and comfortable seating for four adults. The light steering, responsive gearshift, and planted handling make it a joy to drive around town, whilst the spacious interior and good visibility offer a surprisingly big-car feel. Safety is impressive, with a five-star Euro NCAP rating and optional autonomous emergency braking available.

Running costs are exceptionally low, with fuel economy of 45-50 mpg, minimal insurance premiums (groups 2-4), and free road tax for pre-2017 models. Servicing is affordable, though budget for a cambelt replacement every three years. The later electric Citigo-e iV offers pure electric motoring with up to 161 miles range and rapid charging capability, making it an excellent choice for urban drivers. Depreciation is steeper than the VW Up, but the Citigo remains outstanding value compared to rivals, offering fun, comfort, reliability and efficiency at the cheapest possible price.

Best for: Budget-conscious buyers seeking a practical, fun and economical city car, learner drivers, urban commuters, and those interested in affordable electric motoring (Citigo-e iV).

Not ideal for: Buyers prioritising premium interior quality, those requiring high performance, or drivers needing a three-person rear bench seat.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Citigo if: You're seeking a budget-friendly, practical and economical city car, a learner driver, an urban commuter, or interested in affordable electric motoring.

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise premium interior quality, require high performance, or need a three-person rear bench seat.

Competitive Position: The Skoda Citigo (2012-2020) stands out as one of the best small cars available on the used market, offering exceptional value compared to rivals. Whilst the Hyundai i10 scores slightly higher on user ratings and the Renault Clio offers more style, the Citigo delivers superior affordability, fun handling, and low running costs. It matches the VW Up for quality but undercuts it significantly on price. For budget-conscious buyers prioritising practicality, reliability and economy, the Citigo is the standout choice in the city car segment.
