Skoda Citigo (2012-2020) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Better value than a VW Up | Interior not as posh as VW Up's |
| Fun yet comfortable to drive | Equipment can feel a little basic |
| Cheap to run | Limited performance |
Quick Summary
The Skoda Citigo (2012-2020) is one of the best small city cars available on the used market. Offered in both three- and five-door variants, it delivers excellent practicality for its size with a 251-litre boot and comfortable seating for four. The light steering, responsive gearshift, and planted handling make it brilliantly wieldy around town, whilst the 1.0-litre MPI petrol engine (available in 59bhp or 74bhp) feels willing despite modest performance. It rides comfortably over most roads and offers a reassuring, big-car feel thanks to its secure stance and wheel-at-each-corner design.
Running costs are exceptionally low, with fuel economy of 45-50mpg, affordable servicing, and insurance groups between 2 and 4. Road tax is free for cars registered before 31 March 2017. The Citigo received a full five-star Euro NCAP rating and was among the first small cars to offer autonomous emergency braking. In 2019, Skoda introduced the electric Citigo-e iV with a 36.8kWh battery offering up to 161 miles of range, though used examples command premium prices. The Skoda remains the cheapest of the VW Group city car trio, making it exceptional value for money.
Best for: Budget-conscious buyers seeking a fun, practical, and reliable small car; those wanting low running costs; and drivers with access to charging who want an affordable electric city car.
Not ideal for: Buyers prioritising premium interior quality (like the VW Up), those needing strong performance, or those requiring a three-person rear bench.

The Verdict
You should buy the Citigo if: You're seeking exceptional value, a fun and comfortable small car for everyday driving, or want the cheapest option among VW Group city cars.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise premium interior quality, require stronger performance, or need a three-person rear bench seat.
Competitive Position: The Skoda Citigo (2012-2020) stands out as one of the best small cars around, offering outstanding value compared to its VW Up and Seat Mii siblings. Whilst the Hyundai i10 and Toyota Yaris offer slightly higher user ratings and overall CarGurus scores, the Citigo delivers superior affordability without compromising on practicality, comfort, or driving enjoyment. Its low running costs, excellent safety credentials, and fun handling make it an exceptional choice for budget-conscious buyers. The electric Citigo-e iV also represents a compelling entry point into small EV ownership for those with suitable charging infrastructure.

The Skoda Citigo is well-regarded for its value, ease of driving, and comfort, making it ideal for new drivers. Owners like its spacious feel despite its compact size and commend its fuel efficiency. However, some drivers do mention that the engine lacks power, making it feel underwhelming at times. Overall, it combines practicality with economical driving, although performance can be a concern for those seeking more power.

Fantastic little car. Very nippy and a pleasure to drive. Holds the road really well. Excellent value for money.
I no longer needed a Chelsea Tractor. The Citigo has enough features, is not over complicated, it is easy to drive , comfortable and economical. This is my fourth Skoda ( each a different model ). Need I say no more ?
