Skoda Kamiq (2019-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Very roomy for a small SUV | Not as much fun as a Ford Puma |
| Good value for money | There's no fuel-sipping hybrid model |
| Comfortable to travel in and appealing to drive | Lacks the sliding rear seats of some rivals |
Quick Summary
The Skoda Kamiq (2019-present) is a compact crossover that combines practicality with excellent value. Launched in 2019 as a smaller alternative to Skoda's Karoq and Kodiaq SUVs, the Kamiq has received almost universally positive critical reception. Despite its supermini-sized footprint, it offers surprising interior space with a well-finished cabin that outshines most competitors. With 400 litres of boot space and comfortable rear seating for adults, it's a highly serviceable family car. The driving position sits lower than typical SUVs, which may disappoint those seeking a high-up seating position.
Engine options include three petrol variants (94bhp, 114bhp, and 148bhp) and one diesel (114bhp 1.6-litre TDI), with the 114bhp petrol offering the best balance for most buyers. All engines deliver impressive fuel economy, with the diesel achieving 48.7-52.3mpg and petrol variants returning 41.5-50.4mpg depending on specification. Insurance groups are competitive, starting from group eight, and Skoda's fixed-price servicing plans offer predictable running costs. The Kamiq is available in four trim levels: S, SE, SE L, and Monte Carlo, with equipment ranging from basic to well-equipped depending on specification.
Best for: Families seeking a practical, spacious small SUV with excellent value, comfortable long-distance travel, and reliable build quality, plus those wanting impressive fuel economy without hybrid technology.
Not ideal for: Buyers prioritising engaging driving dynamics (the Ford Puma is more fun), those requiring sliding rear seats, or drivers wanting a high-up SUV seating position.
Comparison vs Key Rivals

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Skoda Kamiq | 5/5 | 5.0/5 | 34.2% | 4.5/5 |
| Ford Puma | 5/5 | 5.0/5 | 34.6% | 4.6/5 |

| Volkswagen T-Cross | 4/5 | N/A | 34.4% | 3.9/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Kamiq if: You're seeking a practical, spacious small SUV with excellent value, comfortable long-distance travel, and reliable build quality, or want impressive fuel economy without hybrid technology.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise engaging driving dynamics (the Ford Puma is more fun), require sliding rear seats, or want a high-up SUV seating position.
Competitive Position: The Skoda Kamiq (2019-present) is a top-tier contender in the small SUV class, offering exceptional interior space and value that rivals struggle to match. Whilst the Ford Puma edges ahead with more engaging driving dynamics, the Kamiq's superior roominess, well-finished cabin, and impressive fuel economy make it an excellent choice for families and practical buyers. It outperforms the Nissan Juke and Volkswagen T-Cross in overall appeal, offering more space and better value without sacrificing comfort or reliability. The Kamiq represents a sensible, well-rounded choice for those prioritising practicality and comfort over driving thrills.
