Skoda Scala (2019-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Roomy inside, with a particularly big boot	Boring to drive
Great value for money	No electric or plug-in hybrid option
Comfortable ride	Some of the interior plastics look a touch cheap

Quick Summary

The Skoda Scala (2019-present) is a practical and spacious family hatchback that strikes an excellent balance between the smaller Fabia and larger Octavia. It offers more rear legroom and boot space than most Golf rivals, with a generous 467-litre boot expanding to 1,410 litres with the rear seats folded. The driving position is sound, and air vents between the front seats keep rear passengers comfortable. Built on a stretched MQB A0 platform, the Scala delivers impressive practicality without compromising on ease of parking.

The engine line-up is straightforward and efficient, featuring three petrol options (94bhp, 114bhp, and 148bhp 1.0-litre and 1.5-litre TSI units) and a 114bhp 1.6-litre TDI diesel. Fuel economy is competitive across the board, with the diesel achieving up to 60.1mpg and petrol engines returning 44-51mpg depending on specification. Whilst the Scala prioritises comfort and practicality over driving excitement, it handles neatly and smooths over bumpy roads effectively. Insurance groups are modest, and servicing costs are reasonable with flexible service intervals available. As an affordable family hatchback with excellent space and value, the Scala represents a sensible choice for families and commuters.

Best for: Families seeking spacious, practical transport; budget-conscious buyers wanting excellent value; those prioritising comfort and interior room over driving dynamics.

Not ideal for: Drivers wanting an engaging, sporty drive; buyers seeking hybrid or electric powertrains; those who prefer premium interior materials throughout.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Scala if: You're a family seeking spacious, practical transport; a budget-conscious buyer wanting excellent value; or someone prioritising comfort and interior room over driving dynamics.

Consider alternatives if: You want an engaging, sporty drive, are seeking hybrid or electric powertrains, or prefer premium interior materials throughout.

Competitive Position: The Skoda Scala is one of the best small family cars available, offering exceptional space, practicality, and value. Whilst the Ford Focus edges ahead with superior driving dynamics and the Volkswagen Golf offers premium appeal, the Scala delivers more interior room than both at a more competitive price point. The Vauxhall Astra provides a similar proposition but lacks the Scala's refinement and build quality. For families prioritising practicality and affordability, the Scala represents outstanding value in the family hatchback segment.
