Great little car. Lovely to drive, can turn on a sixpence! Still discovering all the gadgets and gizmos. Very good value and economical.

Great value, fab little run around. The boot is quite large and the four seats are a definite plus. The engine is in the boot and the front bonnet just pops off to reveal the water fill up. The dash is easy to understand and for a l.0 its pretty nippy. The passion is orange inside and the way it has been done it looks great. A wonderful little car which has zero car tax

a decent small car for around the town. Front seats have plenty of room for the average sized driver. The back less so wouldnt want to travel too far seated there. Driving in Eco mode with air con etc. off gives me a range of around 90ish miles. The 2020 model will accept 22kw charging but mine was only supplied with a 32A 7Kw l+ 13A domestic mains lead. So for fast charging you need to splash out on a new fast charging [3phase] lead. The boot is small especially when the two charging cable are bagged in it. However it improves a bit when the seats are folded down .

For such a small vehicle it handles and responds like a larger engined vehicle.

Smart ForFour (2014-2022) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Manoeuvrability makes it very capable in the city | Not all that much fun to drive |
| Unusual styling stands out | Rather expensive compared with rivals |
| Generally feels like a premium product | Small boot |
Quick Summary
The Smart ForFour (2014-2022) is a four-seat urban runabout developed in conjunction with the Renault Twingo. This second-generation model offers more refinement and sound deadening than its predecessor, with clever space-maximising features including rear doors that open to 85 degrees and seats that fold completely flat for 975 litres of boot space. Available with a non-turbo 1.0-litre petrol engine (70bhp) or a turbocharged 0.9-litre three-cylinder (89bhp), paired with either a five-speed manual or six-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox, it excels as a nimble city car with an impressive 8.65-metre turning circle.
The ForFour delivers a relaxed, fuss-free driving experience with excellent manoeuvrability and a well-balanced chassis that makes it quite fun on twistier routes. However, it's not the most comfortable for longer motorway journeys, as the small engines require hard work to keep pace with faster traffic and cabin noise remains noticeable. Fuel economy reaches around 54.3mpg with the turbocharged automatic, whilst CO2 emissions of 113-123g/km keep tax costs low. The interior feels vibrant and refined with good design flourishes, though some cheaper plastics appear lower in the cabin. As a used purchase, the ForFour offers excellent value following depreciation, with low running costs and sensible insurance groups making it an ideal first car for younger drivers.
Best for: Urban drivers seeking a nimble, easy-to-park city car with stylish design, first-time buyers, and those prioritising manoeuvrability over performance.
Not ideal for: Buyers wanting a spacious boot, those planning frequent motorway journeys, drivers seeking engaging performance, or those seeking better value than rivals like the Renault Twingo.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Smart ForFour | 2/5 | 4.8/5 | 41.6% | 3.9/5 |
| Fiat 500 | 3/5 | 4.6/5 | 33.9% | 4.1/5 |
| Renault Twingo | 3/5 | 5.0/5 | 32.5% | 4.0/5 |

The Verdict
You should buy the ForFour if: You're an urban driver seeking a nimble, easy-to-park city car with stylish design, a first-time buyer, or someone prioritising manoeuvrability over performance.
Consider alternatives if: You need a spacious boot, plan frequent motorway journeys, seek engaging performance, or want better value than rivals like the Renault Twingo.
Competitive Position: The Smart ForFour (2014-2022) is a capable urban runabout that excels in city environments with its exceptional manoeuvrability and distinctive styling. However, it faces stiff competition from more affordable alternatives like the Renault Twingo, which is mechanically similar but cheaper, and the more refined Volkswagen Up. Whilst the ForFour feels like a premium product with clever design touches, its small boot, modest performance, and higher price point compared to rivals make it a niche choice. For those valuing style, urban agility, and premium feel over practicality and value, it remains an excellent option on the used market.
