Smart ForFour (2014-2022) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Manoeuvrability makes it very capable in the city	Not all that much fun to drive
Unusual styling stands out	Rather expensive compared with rivals
Generally feels like a premium product	Small boot

Quick Summary

The Smart ForFour (2014-2022) is a four-seat city car developed in conjunction with the Renault Twingo, offering a more refined driving experience than its predecessor. Designed for urban environments, it features an exceptionally tight 8.65-metre turning circle and excellent manoeuvrability, making it ideal for navigating congested city streets and parking in tight spaces. The rear doors open to 85 degrees, facilitating easier access to the cramped rear quarters and child seat installation. With rear seats folded, the ForFour provides an impressive 975 litres of boot space, though with seats up, it manages only 185 litres.

Available with either a non-turbo 1.0-litre petrol engine (70bhp) or a turbocharged 0.9-litre three-cylinder (89bhp), the ForFour delivers modest performance suited to short urban hops. Fuel economy reaches approximately 54.3mpg with the automatic 0.9-litre engine, whilst CO2 emissions of 113-123g/km keep running costs low. The interior feels vibrant and premium, with clever design touches and good standard equipment. However, it remains expensive compared with rivals, and the small engines require hard work on motorway journeys, resulting in increased noise levels. The ride is comfortable on UK roads, particularly with smaller 16-inch alloy wheels specified.

Best for: Urban drivers seeking exceptional manoeuvrability and parking ease, those valuing distinctive styling and premium interior feel, and budget-conscious buyers willing to purchase used examples after depreciation.

Not ideal for: Drivers prioritising value for money, those requiring a spacious boot with seats up, or buyers seeking engaging driving dynamics and motorway comfort.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the ForFour if: You prioritise urban manoeuvrability and parking ease, value distinctive styling and premium interior quality, or seek an affordable used city car after depreciation has worked its magic.

Consider alternatives if: You require excellent value for money, need a spacious boot with seats up, or prioritise engaging driving dynamics and motorway comfort.

Competitive Position: The Smart ForFour (2014-2022) excels as an urban companion with exceptional manoeuvrability and a premium feel, but struggles against rivals on value and driving engagement. Whilst the Renault Twingo offers near-identical mechanicals at a lower price, and the Fiat 500 matches its style credentials, the ForFour's superior interior refinement and clever design touches justify its premium positioning for those willing to pay. However, for buyers seeking overall value and practicality, alternatives like the Citroën Grand C4 Picasso offer significantly more space and capability. The ForFour remains best suited to style-conscious urban drivers unconcerned by comparative pricing.
