Subaru XV (2018-2023) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Much tougher and more able off road than most rivals	Limited choice of engines
Comprehensive safety equipment	Not as good to drive as a Seat Ateca
No-nonsense reliability	Pricey to buy as a new car

Quick Summary

The Subaru XV (2018-2023) is a compact crossover that prioritises genuine off-road capability over on-road refinement. This second-generation model, which replaced the original XV in 2018 and was itself replaced by the Crosstrek in 2024, offers Subaru's excellent four-wheel-drive system and X-Mode traction control. Available with a 112bhp 1.6-litre petrol, a 154bhp 2.0-litre petrol, or a 2.0-litre e-Boxer hybrid (from 2020), all models feature the Lineartronic Continuously Variable Transmission. The cabin has a rally-inspired feel with a chunky three-spoke steering wheel and drilled metal pedals, though materials feel functional rather than upmarket. Boot space is relatively modest at 340 litres.

The XV suits rural drivers seeking all-weather capability and genuine off-road prowess rather than those prioritising on-road dynamics or practicality. Fuel economy ranges from 30-35mpg in real-world conditions, with the e-Boxer achieving the best official figures at 35.7mpg. The absence of a diesel engine is a notable drawback compared to rivals like the Skoda Karoq. Insurance costs are reasonable, with entry-level models in group 10E. Servicing is required every 12 months or 12,000 miles, and Subaru's relatively small dealer network may require travelling for franchised servicing. As a used car, the XV represents better value than new, having depreciated more quickly than some competitors.

Best for: Rural drivers needing genuine off-road capability, buyers seeking no-nonsense reliability, and those wanting comprehensive safety equipment as standard.

Not ideal for: Drivers prioritising on-road handling (like a Seat Ateca), comfort (like a Skoda Karoq), practicality, or fuel economy, and high-mileage drivers who would benefit from a diesel engine.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the XV if: You're a rural driver needing genuine off-road capability, seeking no-nonsense reliability, or wanting comprehensive safety equipment as standard.

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise on-road handling, comfort, practicality, fuel economy, or require a diesel engine for high-mileage driving.

Competitive Position: The Subaru XV (2018-2023) occupies a unique niche in the compact SUV market, excelling where rivals fall short: genuine off-road ability. Whilst the Seat Ateca offers superior on-road dynamics and the Skoda Karoq provides greater comfort and practicality, the XV's authentic four-wheel-drive system and X-Mode traction control make it the standout choice for rural drivers. However, its limited engine range, absence of diesel, and higher fuel consumption compared to rivals like the Karoq mean it's not the obvious choice for most SUV buyers. As a used car, the XV represents excellent value, particularly for those willing to let the first owner absorb the initial depreciation hit.
