Suzuki Jimny (2018-2024) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Brilliant to drive off road	Noisy and uncomfortable on tarmac
Quirky and characterful looks	Cramped rear seats and tiny boot
There's nothing else quite like it	Over-inflated used prices

Quick Summary

The Suzuki Jimny (2018-2024) is a uniquely characterful and capable off-roader that modernises the iconic boxy design into an achingly cool miniature Mercedes G-Class aesthetic. Only the fourth generation of this model, the Jimny was withdrawn from sale after just two years due to high CO2 emissions, making it a rare and highly sought-after used purchase. With its ladder frame chassis, switchable four-wheel drive system, and exceptional off-road capability, it delivers scarcely believable terrain-conquering ability for a vehicle under 3.5 metres long and weighing just 1,135kg.

However, the Jimny is fundamentally an off-road specialist, not a practical family car or daily commuter. The non-turbo 1.5-litre petrol engine produces just 90mph top speed and requires 12 seconds to reach 62mph, making motorway journeys noisy and uncomfortable. Rear passengers face cramped conditions with limited access, whilst boot space of just 377 litres is smaller than a VW Golf. Running costs are reasonable, with fuel economy around 35-41.5mpg and insurance group 13-14, but used prices have inflated significantly due to its cult status and scarcity in the UK market.

Best for: Off-road enthusiasts, adventure seekers, and buyers who prioritise unique character and all-terrain capability over everyday practicality and comfort.

Not ideal for: Families requiring a practical daily commuter, those needing comfortable rear seating, drivers seeking motorway comfort, or buyers wanting a spacious boot.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Jimny if: You're an off-road enthusiast, adventure seeker, or buyer who prioritises unique character and all-terrain capability over everyday practicality and comfort.

Consider alternatives if: You need a practical daily commuter, require comfortable rear seating, seek motorway comfort, or want a spacious boot for family use.

Competitive Position: The Suzuki Jimny (2018-2024) occupies a unique position in the compact SUV market, offering unmatched off-road capability and character that rivals cannot replicate. Whilst the Dacia Duster provides better practicality and road manners, and the Fiat Panda 4x4 and Suzuki Ignis AllGrip offer superior everyday usability, none deliver the Jimny's single-minded off-road focus or cult appeal. The Jimny's inflated used prices reflect its scarcity and desirability, making it a premium choice for those prioritising adventure over practicality. For budget-conscious buyers seeking a more versatile four-wheel drive option, alternatives offer better value and family-friendly features.
