Suzuki Jimny (2018-2024) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Brilliant to drive off road | Noisy and uncomfortable on tarmac |
| Quirky and characterful looks | Cramped rear seats and tiny boot |
| There's nothing else quite like it | Over-inflated used prices |
Quick Summary
The Suzuki Jimny (2018-2024) is the distinctive fourth generation of Suzuki’s rugged off-roader, celebrated for its boxy, cool styling that evokes a miniature Mercedes G-Class. Despite its instant fan base, the passenger car version was removed from sale after just two years (July 2020) due to high CO2 emissions, subsequently being sold as a light commercial vehicle. Its unique appeal and limited numbers mean used prices are currently inflated, often exceeding its original new cost.
While exceptional off-road, thanks to its ladder frame chassis, switchable 4WD, and low-range gears, the Jimny makes significant compromises on tarmac. Its non-turbo 1.5-litre engine results in slow acceleration, a noisy cabin, and an uncomfortable, lumpy ride on longer journeys, with poor high-speed stability. Practicality is limited by its diminutive size, a cramped two-seat rear bench, and a tiny boot (377 litres with seats folded). Running costs are generally low, with reasonable insurance and servicing, and an official fuel economy of 41.5 mpg (real-world closer to 35 mpg).
Best for: Off-road enthusiasts, those seeking a unique and characterful vehicle, buyers who prioritise rugged capability over on-road comfort, and those who don't need a family car or daily commuter.
Not ideal for: Families, daily commuting, buyers prioritising on-road comfort, speed, or spaciousness, or those looking for an inexpensive used car.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Suzuki Jimny | 2/5 | 4.6/5 | 9.7% | 3.8/5 |
| Dacia Duster | 4/5 | 4.5/5 | N/A | 4.3/5 |

| Fiat Panda | 3/5 | 4.1/5 | N/A | 4.0/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Jimny if: You're an off-road enthusiast, seeking a unique and characterful vehicle, prioritising rugged capability over on-road comfort, and don't need a family car or daily commuter.
Consider alternatives if: You need a family car, a comfortable daily commuter, or prioritise on-road comfort, speed, spaciousness, or lower used prices.
Competitive Position: The Suzuki Jimny (2018-2024) stands apart in the market as a single-minded, highly capable off-roader with immense character and cult appeal. While its on-road manners, practicality, and current inflated used prices are significant compromises compared to more conventional rivals like the Dacia Duster, Fiat Panda 4x4, or Suzuki Ignis AllGrip, there is truly nothing else quite like it for its blend of miniature size and extreme ruggedness. It's a niche vehicle for those who value authentic off-road prowess and distinctive style above all else.

4.6 Overall rating
(19 reviews)Excellent little 4x4 excellent value . A bit short on extras . Camera , parking aids , alloy wheels , (would defo get seat conversion ) sound deadening could be up graded . All in all a cracking little 4x4 . A real little off roader for a fraction of a Range Rovers cost .
For the age and the simplicity this vehicle is the perfect cheap but yet cheerful, the best 4x4 money can buy
Just what I wanted. I am a Suzuki Jimmy fan- owned one for 14 years and this is the upgrade to the new model having waited one year for prices/availability to settle.
Good to look at , fun to drive and cheap to run.
Great little 4x4 and Suzukis are so reliable.fantastic car
