Tesla Model S (2014-present) Pros and Cons

Pros Cons
Mind-bending acceleration The interior could be better finished
Excellent range and charging network Some question marks over reliability
Very well equipped More recent Tesla models are cheaper to buy new

Quick Summary

The Tesla Model S is a groundbreaking all-electric saloon that revolutionised the automotive industry upon its launch. It combines impressive performance, with even basic models accelerating from 0-60mph in 5.9 seconds, with an exceptional range of up to 310 miles on a single charge. The minimalist interior is spacious and comfortable for four adults, with a 709-litre boot and an additional 89-litre frunk providing generous storage. Advanced features, including a large high-definition touchscreen infotainment system and the Autopilot system, make it a technologically sophisticated choice.

Running costs are significantly lower than conventional petrol or diesel alternatives, with no fuel expenses, zero VED charges, and minimal servicing requirements. The extensive Supercharger network makes long-distance travel practical, whilst over-the-air updates continuously enhance the vehicle's capabilities. Although some question marks exist regarding interior finish quality and reliability, the Model S remains an excellent choice for those seeking comfort, refinement, serious performance, and advanced technology in an electric vehicle.

Best for: Drivers seeking an electric car with comfort, performance, and advanced technology; those who travel long distances and value the Supercharger network; buyers prioritising low running costs and environmental considerations.

Not ideal for: Those concerned about interior finish quality or reliability; buyers seeking a more traditional, plusher interior experience; those requiring the most engaging driving dynamics available in the electric vehicle segment.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Model S if: You're seeking an electric car with comfort, performance, and advanced technology; you travel long distances and value an extensive charging network; you prioritise low running costs and environmental considerations.

Consider alternatives if: You're concerned about interior finish quality or reliability; you desire a more traditional, plusher interior experience; you require the most engaging driving dynamics available in the electric vehicle segment.

Competitive Position: The Tesla Model S remains a strong contender in the premium electric vehicle market, offering mind-bending acceleration, excellent range, and a comprehensive charging network. Whilst the Porsche Taycan provides a more engaging driving experience and potentially better reliability, and rivals like the Jaguar I-Pace and Audi E-Tron offer plusher interiors, the Model S's combination of performance, practicality, and lower cost makes it a compelling choice. Its spacious interior, advanced technology, and significantly lower running costs compared to conventional vehicles ensure it remains well worth considering for discerning electric vehicle buyers.

No engine with a “billion” moving parts, no transmission, no extras such as turbo chargers or intricate air intake systems just highly reliable electric motors means very little need for maintenance. Brakes last years and years because there is no need to use them much. A full tank costs a fraction of a fill up at the local pump. The included high tech is second to none. Software updates keep up with Jones and resolve what can be major issues with other cars.

Its clearly The car of the future as fossil fuelled new car sales banned in a few years. Technically its the very best electric vehicle, comfort; with its air suspension, the longest range in the EV market, safety wise its again ranked the very best or amongst them. Design wise, I love its sleek minimalist approach which works perfectly for me. Great reputation coupled with the most forward thinking car manufacturer for many decades. What is there not to like about the Tesla Model S.
