Tesla Model S (2014-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Mind-bending acceleration	The interior could be better finished
Excellent range and charging network	Some question marks over reliability
Very well equipped	More recent Tesla models are cheaper to buy new

Quick Summary

The Tesla Model S (2014-present) is a groundbreaking all-electric saloon that revolutionised the automotive industry by proving electric vehicles could be practical, powerful, and desirable. With an impressive range of up to 405 miles on a single charge for newer models, the Model S offers genuine long-distance capability backed by Tesla's extensive Supercharger network. The car combines a minimalist, spacious interior with remarkable acceleration, advanced technology, and a 709-litre boot plus 89-litre frunk, making it exceptionally practical for families and those who travel frequently.

Running costs are significantly lower than conventional petrol or diesel alternatives, with minimal servicing requirements and zero fuel expenses. The Model S remains a remarkable achievement in automotive engineering, offering comfort, refinement, and serious performance. Whilst rivals like the Porsche Taycan provide a more engaging driving experience and potentially better reliability, the Tesla's accessible pricing, longer claimed range, and comprehensive technology package make it an excellent choice for those seeking a premium electric saloon. Over-the-air updates continuously enhance capabilities, and strong residual values help keep ownership costs down.

Best for: Buyers seeking an electric car with comfort, advanced technology, and serious performance; those who travel long distances regularly; environmentally conscious drivers wanting low running costs.

Not ideal for: Those prioritising the finest interior finish or maximum driving engagement; buyers concerned about reliability and after-sales support; those seeking the newest electric vehicle technology at a lower price point.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Model S if: You're seeking an electric car with comfort, advanced technology, and serious performance; you travel long distances regularly; you want low running costs and environmental credentials.

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise the finest interior finish or maximum driving engagement, or you're concerned about reliability and after-sales support.

Competitive Position: The Tesla Model S remains a strong contender in the premium electric saloon market, offering exceptional range, practicality, and performance at a competitive price point. Whilst the Porsche Taycan edges ahead with a more engaging driving experience and superior interior finish, the Model S's longer claimed range, comprehensive technology suite, and lower cost make it an excellent choice for most buyers. The Jaguar I-Pace offers comparable practicality, whilst the Audi E-Tron provides good value, but the Tesla's established Supercharger network and proven track record give it a significant advantage for long-distance travel.
