Toyota Aygo X (2022-2026) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Lots of standard equipment	A little short of power
Impressive fuel economy	Quite pricey
Decent space given its compact dimensions	Not that much fun to drive

Quick Summary

The Toyota Aygo X (2022-2026) is a distinctive, funky city car that breaks the mould of its predecessors by adopting a pint-sized SUV design. Despite its off-roader-like appearance, it remains strictly front-wheel drive with a single naturally aspirated 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine producing 71bhp. What sets it apart is its generous standard equipment, including lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, and a touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Aygo X offers impressive interior packaging with 231 litres of boot space, expanding to 829 litres with rear seats folded, making it remarkably practical for its diminutive 3,700mm length.

Running costs are a genuine strength, with fuel economy consistently exceeding 50mpg and official figures of 58.9mpg achievable with the manual transmission. Insurance groups are typically low (group six), keeping premiums manageable. However, the 71bhp engine requires hard work on faster roads, taking 14.9 seconds to reach 62mph, and the car is relatively expensive for its class, with top-spec models approaching supermini pricing. The ride is composed despite the short wheelbase, and the steering is precise, though the driving experience prioritises practicality and efficiency over excitement. Toyota's potential 10-year warranty adds appeal for long-term ownership.

Best for: Budget-conscious city drivers seeking character and technology, those prioritising fuel economy and low running costs, and buyers valuing Toyota's reliability and warranty coverage.

Not ideal for: Drivers seeking performance or engaging driving dynamics, those requiring more power for motorway cruising, or buyers wanting the lowest possible purchase price in the city car segment.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Aygo X if: You value distinctive character, generous standard equipment, and impressive fuel economy, and prioritise ease of ownership and Toyota's warranty over driving excitement.

Consider alternatives if: You require more performance, seek the lowest purchase price in the city car segment, or prioritise engaging driving dynamics over practicality and technology.

Competitive Position: The Toyota Aygo X is a characterful and well-equipped city car that stands out from its rivals through its distinctive design and generous standard technology. Whilst it scores lower than the Hyundai i10 for driving engagement and the Fiat Grande Panda for value, it competes well on equipment and fuel economy. The Kia Picanto offers similar practicality at a potentially lower price point, but the Aygo X's Toyota badge, warranty potential, and comprehensive safety features make it an appealing choice for buyers seeking a premium city car experience. Its relatively high purchase price is offset by low running costs and impressive standard specification.
