Toyota Land Cruiser (2009-2023) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| No-nonsense 4x4 with serious off-road ability | Costly to fuel, especially cars made before the 2020 update |
| Reliability the likes of which Land Rover owners can only dream of | Clumsy and unsophisticated to drive on the road |
| Top-spec models are very well equipped | The Invincible spec model is expensive |
Quick Summary
The Toyota Land Cruiser (2009-2023) is a no-nonsense, body-on-frame 4x4 with an unrivalled reputation for reliability and serious off-road capability. This generation arrived in Britain in 2009 and was replaced in 2024, offering seven seats with comfortable accommodation for five adults. The interior prioritises practicality over luxury, with a spacious cabin and impressive boot capacity of up to 640 litres when the rear seats are folded. Early models feature a tough 3.0-litre D-4D diesel engine, whilst the 2.8-litre engine introduced in 2015 offers improved performance and fuel economy, with further refinements arriving in 2020.
On tarmac, the Land Cruiser feels ponderous and unwieldy, with vague steering and noticeable body roll, making it less comfortable than rivals like the Land Rover Discovery or more sporty than the Audi Q5. However, if off-road capability and legendary reliability are your priorities, the Land Cruiser excels. Running costs are significant, with early 3.0-litre models achieving around 30mpg in real-world driving and high annual tax bills. The newer 2.8-litre engine delivers better economy and lower emissions, whilst insurance groups remain reasonable. Toyota's service plans and 5+ Club discounts help manage maintenance costs.
Best for: Serious off-road enthusiasts, those valuing reliability above all else, and buyers requiring a capable 4x4 for remote environments or regular towing.
Not ideal for: Drivers prioritising on-road comfort, smooth handling, or low running costs, or those seeking a plush, upmarket cabin experience.

The Verdict
You should buy the Land Cruiser if: You're a serious off-road enthusiast, value reliability above all else, or require a capable 4x4 for remote environments or regular towing.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise on-road comfort, smooth handling, low running costs, or a plush, upmarket cabin experience.
Competitive Position: The Toyota Land Cruiser (2009-2023) is a formidable choice for buyers seeking genuine off-road capability and legendary reliability. Whilst the Land Rover Discovery offers superior on-road comfort and handling, and the Jeep Grand Cherokee provides a more balanced road-and-trail experience, the Land Cruiser remains unmatched for durability and off-road prowess. It's a vehicle built for purpose rather than luxury, making it ideal for those who value substance over style. The 2020 updates significantly improved performance and efficiency, making newer examples particularly attractive. For buyers willing to sacrifice on-road refinement for uncompromising reliability and off-road ability, the Land Cruiser is a worthy investment.

4.5 Overall rating
(6 reviews)Bought for towing purposes, at which it is great and makes the drive feel safe and comfortable. A large vehicle, but with good vision from it. As it is a towing vehicle it is just a pity that the boot door opens sideways rather than upwards as the door then hits the trailer behind the car.
very reliable, dependable and cost effective. it can never win races but it will definitely take you wherever you want to go. love this vehicle!!
The Vehicle Appearance seemed very good but the Price & Mileage were to High.
Engine is good, suspension good everything is good relatable all time
Substantial chunk of car that will go forever. Not the fastest, you won’t beat many away from the lights, but once it’s upto cruising speed it feels very comfortable and capable. Great driving position,, you’re way up high allowing you to look down on all the other SUV crossovers. It’s a thirsty beast, but it weighs about as much as an oil tanker, so no surprise there. Roomy interior, but if you use the 3rd row of seats, the boot space is minuscule. Kids or vertically challenged passengers only in the 3rd row if you are going any distance. Without the 3rd row its an ample boot. I guess the competition is mainly Land Rover, either the Discovery 4 or new model,, Mitsubishi Shogun.or Ssang Yong Rexton. The Toyota lacks the refinement and electronic wizardry of the Landrovers,, feeling a little more agricultural in comparison. But if you want a car that will last 200,000miles + my money is on the Landcruiser. Solid, utterly dependable and reliable based on its trusted and proven engineering. The Shogun feels smaller and more sluggish in comparison and the Rexton more dated and dare I say, ugly. Hence it’s the Landcruiser for me. Big, reliable and capable , but thirsty, heavy, with glacial acceleration and lacking electronic toys. Oh, and the Toyota Sat Nav is possibly one of the worst I have ever used. But despite the niggles, I love my Landcruiser.
