Toyota Yaris (2021-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Very economical, especially around town | The ride is on the firm side |
| Fantastic GR Yaris hot hatch | Not as practical as a Honda Jazz |
| Plenty of safety kit as standard | No satnav on pre-facelift models |
Quick Summary
The Toyota Yaris (2021-present) is a stylish and sensible hybrid supermini that breaks from its predecessors' staid image with a sports-car-esque nose and chunky rear. Available exclusively as a hybrid (bar the GR Yaris hot hatch), it offers exceptional fuel economy and comes with a sensational warranty. It competes against other hybrid rivals like the MG3 Hybrid, Renault Clio, and Honda Jazz, as well as conventional petrol superminis.
Out on the road, the Yaris is stable and responsive, particularly around town, with a perky 1.5-litre hybrid system. While the ride can be firm on imperfect surfaces, light steering and an automatic gearbox make it easy to drive. Practicality is good upfront, though the 286-litre boot is average. Running costs are a major highlight, with real-world MPG often reaching 60-65, reasonable servicing, and a lifetime timing chain. The high-performance GR Yaris offers unhinged performance and agile handling as a rally-derived homologation special.
Best for: Drivers prioritising economy, style, reliability (warranty), urban driving, or an exciting hot hatch (GR Yaris).
Not ideal for: Buyers who need maximum boot space (e.g., Honda Jazz), prefer a softer ride, or seek the ultimate in driving fun from a standard supermini (e.g., Ford Fiesta).

The Verdict
You should buy the Yaris if: You're prioritising economy, style, reliability (thanks to the long warranty), urban driving, or seeking an exciting hot hatch (GR Yaris).
Consider alternatives if: You need maximum boot space (e.g., Honda Jazz), prefer a softer ride, or seek the ultimate in driving fun from a standard supermini (e.g., Ford Fiesta).
Competitive Position: The Toyota Yaris (2021-present) stands out in the supermini segment with its striking design and hybrid-only powertrain, offering excellent fuel economy, especially in urban environments. While its ride can be firm and boot space isn't class-leading, its stylish design, standard safety kit, and long warranty make it a compelling choice. The addition of the enthusiast-focused GR Yaris further broadens its appeal, positioning it as a versatile option for budget-conscious, style-aware, or performance-seeking buyers.

4.7 Overall rating
(59 reviews)Compact outside but remarkably spacious inside. I am 6 6 and can drive it comfortably. Reasonably well equipped and drives very nicely.
Just bought a second Yaris I can’t fault them at all. Especially as a second hand car, neither has ever let me down.
This model benefits from a larger interior boot and rear passenger room space then the newer models, whilst getting the benefits of Toyotas hybrid system.
Really nice car, but would have liked it with a black roof and safety plus pack.
I think Toyota Yaris is a super choice, and have just parted with my previous one after 15 years.
