Quick Summary
The Vauxhall Astra (2023-present) is the eighth generation of this stalwart family hatchback, now under Stellantis ownership. Available as a five-door hatchback or Sports Tourer estate, it offers a comprehensive powertrain range including a 128bhp 1.2-litre turbo petrol, a 143bhp mild hybrid, plug-in hybrids with up to 222bhp (GSe), and a pure electric option with 256 miles of official range. The Astra features a modern, chiselled design with the distinctive 'Vauxhall Vizor' grille, a user-friendly infotainment system with physical controls, and well-appointed interiors across all trim levels.
The hatchback offers 422 litres of boot space, whilst the Sports Tourer provides a generous 597 litres. Driving dynamics are relaxed and confident across all powertrains, with the entry-level petrol offering the sweetest handling. Fuel economy is competitive, with the 1.2-litre petrol achieving around 40mpg in real-world use. The electric version delivers approximately 200 miles of real-world range, whilst plug-in hybrids offer around 30-50 miles of electric-only driving depending on battery size. Well-equipped as standard, the Astra represents excellent value in the family hatchback segment, though rivals offer superior practicality and handling.
Best for: Buyers seeking a well-rounded family hatchback with modern technology, flexible powertrain options, and a comfortable driving experience, particularly those valuing user-friendly infotainment and generous standard equipment.
Not ideal for: Those prioritising maximum interior space and practicality (Seat Leon, Skoda Octavia), superior handling dynamics (VW Golf, Mazda 3), or extended electric range (VW ID.3, Renault Megane E-Tech).

The Verdict
You should buy the Astra if: You're seeking a well-rounded family hatchback with modern technology, flexible powertrain options, and a comfortable driving experience, particularly valuing user-friendly infotainment and generous standard equipment.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise maximum interior space and practicality, superior handling dynamics, or extended electric range on EV and PHEV models.
Competitive Position: The Vauxhall Astra (2023-present) is a comprehensive and well-rounded family hatchback that competes strongly in a crowded segment. Whilst it may not match the VW Golf for handling excellence or the Seat Leon and Skoda Octavia for practicality, the Astra's user-friendly infotainment, comfortable ride, flexible powertrain options, and generous standard equipment make it highly recommendable. Its modern styling and logical cabin design offer excellent value, particularly for buyers seeking a car that balances everyday usability with contemporary technology. The choice of petrol, hybrid, and electric powertrains ensures there's an Astra to suit most lifestyles and budgets.

What people say
Very good features for 2007 model. Yes good value. Easy to work on.
The car is working great No issues, minor scratches expected, very clean inside Would recommend Happy as
I turned up they had pressure washed the engine, it was dry when I inspected before taking it for a test drive. When I drove off test drived got back it was smoking everywhere and the man tried to tell me it was spilt engine oil.... It was not!
Love my Astra only issue is no Bluetooth but can live with that!
I wanted to buy this car but I observed from my research that one of its issues is oil leakage which is either coming from its engine or gear box components. Its also not so cheap to fix as it cannot be ignored.
