Vauxhall Astra (2023-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| User-friendly cabin and infotainment | Others are roomier and more practical |
| Comfortable ride | Rear visibility could be better |
| Choice of petrol, hybrid or electric power | Range could be better on EV and PHEVs |
Quick Summary
The Vauxhall Astra (2023-present), the eighth generation, marks the first under new owner Stellantis. This comprehensive family hatchback offers multiple powertrain options: a 128bhp 1.2-litre turbo petrol, a 143bhp mild hybrid, a 192bhp plug-in hybrid with up to 50 miles electric range, and a 154bhp pure electric variant with 256 miles official range. Available as a five-door hatchback or Sports Tourer estate, the Astra delivers a relaxed driving experience with a user-friendly interior, logical infotainment system, and well-equipped trim levels from Griffin through to Ultimate.
The Astra excels in comfort and practicality, with a 422-litre boot in hatchback form and 597 litres in the estate. Real-world fuel economy ranges from 40mpg for the petrol to around 200 miles for the electric version. Running costs are competitive, with fixed-price servicing available. Whilst it lacks the handling finesse of the VW Golf or the roominess of the Seat Leon, the Astra represents excellent value with its comprehensive equipment levels and diverse powertrain choices, making it ideal for buyers seeking flexibility and comfort over outright sportiness.
Best for: Families and commuters seeking a well-rounded, comfortable hatchback with multiple powertrain options, and those prioritising user-friendly technology and generous standard equipment.
Not ideal for: Buyers prioritising maximum practicality (Seat Leon, Skoda Octavia), the finest handling dynamics (VW Golf, Mazda 3), or those requiring maximum electric range (VW ID.3, Renault Megane E-Tech).

The Verdict
You should buy the Astra if: You're seeking a well-rounded, comfortable family hatchback with multiple powertrain options, user-friendly technology, and generous standard equipment at competitive prices.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise maximum practicality, the finest handling dynamics, or require maximum electric range from an EV or PHEV.
Competitive Position: The Vauxhall Astra (2023-present) is a strong contender in the family hatchback segment, offering excellent value and versatility. Whilst the VW Golf delivers superior handling and the Seat Leon provides greater practicality, the Astra's comprehensive powertrain range, user-friendly infotainment, and generous equipment levels make it highly competitive. The Peugeot 308 shares the same platform but the Astra's more intuitive controls and better value proposition give it an edge. For buyers seeking comfort, flexibility, and technology without premium pricing, the Astra represents a sensible and recommendable choice.

What people say
Very good features for 2007 model. Yes good value. Easy to work on.
The car is working great No issues, minor scratches expected, very clean inside Would recommend Happy as
I turned up they had pressure washed the engine, it was dry when I inspected before taking it for a test drive. When I drove off test drived got back it was smoking everywhere and the man tried to tell me it was spilt engine oil.... It was not!
Love my Astra only issue is no Bluetooth but can live with that!
I wanted to buy this car but I observed from my research that one of its issues is oil leakage which is either coming from its engine or gear box components. Its also not so cheap to fix as it cannot be ignored.
