I wanted to buy this car but I observed from my research that one of its issues is oil leakage which is either coming from its engine or gear box components. Its also not so cheap to fix as it cannot be ignored.

Vauxhall Astra (2026) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Price parity between engines and bodystyles | Others are roomier and more practical |
| User-friendly cabin and infotainment | Rear visibility could be better |
| Choice of hybrid, plug-in hybrid or electric power | Range could still be better on Astra Electric |
Quick Summary
The Vauxhall Astra (2026) is the eighth generation of this stalwart family hatchback, now under Stellantis ownership. The facelifted version features a revised exterior with the trademark 'Vauxhall Vizor' grille, updated interior with satin grey dash plastics, and a fresh powertrain lineup. Available as a five-door hatchback or Sports Tourer estate with price parity across all powertrains, the Astra offers a 422-litre boot (hatchback) or 597 litres (estate). The 2026 update brings an expanded 58kWh battery for the electric version (281-mile range) and a larger 17.2kWh battery for the plug-in hybrid (52-mile electric range), alongside a 1.2-litre mild-hybrid petrol option.
The Astra delivers a confident and relaxed driving experience across all powertrains. The entry-level 1.2-litre petrol is the sweetest-handling version with predictable steering and eager performance, whilst the electric variant offers instant torque but feels less agile due to battery weight. The plug-in hybrid provides excellent refinement in electric mode, though the petrol engine sounds coarse when revved. Comfort is a real highlight, with the car soaking up bumps and rough surfaces with ease. Running costs are competitive, with the petrol achieving around 40mpg in real-world use and the mild-hybrid offering slightly better efficiency. The cabin is smart and logical with a user-friendly 10.0-inch touchscreen, physical air-con controls, and well-appointed trim levels from Griffin through to Ultimate.
Best for: Drivers seeking a well-rounded family hatchback with modern powertrain options, those valuing user-friendly technology and generous standard equipment, and buyers wanting price parity across different engine types and body styles.
Not ideal for: Those prioritising maximum practicality and roominess (Seat Leon and Skoda Octavia offer more space), drivers needing excellent rear visibility, or those seeking the sharpest handling dynamics (Volkswagen Golf and Mazda 3 excel here).

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Vauxhall Astra | 3/5 | 4.0/5 | 36.1% | 4.2/5 |

| Peugeot 308 | 3/5 | 4.9/5 | 50.2% | 4.3/5 |
| Toyota Corolla | 4/5 | 3.7/5 | 36.0% | 4.3/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Astra if: You're seeking a well-rounded family hatchback with modern powertrain options, value user-friendly technology and generous standard equipment, or want price parity across different engine types and body styles.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise maximum practicality and roominess, need excellent rear visibility, or seek the sharpest handling dynamics available in the class.
Competitive Position: The Vauxhall Astra (2026) is a well-rounded family hatchback that holds its own against established rivals. Whilst the Volkswagen Golf offers superior handling and the Peugeot 308 provides better value deals, the Astra distinguishes itself through price parity across powertrains, a user-friendly cabin, and generous standard equipment. The Toyota Corolla offers reliability but lacks the Astra's modern technology. The Astra's expanded electric and plug-in hybrid options, combined with its relaxed driving manners and logical interior design, make it an attractive proposition for buyers seeking versatility and practicality without compromise.
