Vauxhall Astra Mk6 (2010-2015) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Great value as a used car	No match for a Ford Focus from the driver's seat
Even high-spec models are inexpensive	Below-average reliability
Comfortable and smart interior	Ordinary looks

Quick Summary

The Vauxhall Astra Mk6 (2010-2015) is a steady, sensible, middle-of-the-road family car that offers exceptional value as a used purchase. Whilst it may lack the bedroom wall poster appeal of some rivals, canny buyers recognise its worth. As a new car, the Astra suffered from poor resale values compared to competitors like the Volkswagen Golf, but this works in favour of used buyers seeking a significantly cheaper alternative. The standard five-door hatchback provides ample space for two adults and two children, with a practical 370-litre boot. A sleeker three-door GTC variant and spacious Sports Tourer estate with a 540-litre boot are also available, featuring Vauxhall's versatile Flexfloor system and optional Flexfix bicycle carrier.

The Astra Mk6 is comfortable, predictable, and quiet on the motorway, though it lacks the driving engagement of a Ford Focus. The interior is smart and well-appointed, with quality switchgear and controls, though numerous buttons can initially confuse. A vast engine range spans from the economical 1.4-litre petrol to the potent 2.0-litre turbo VXR, with efficient CDTi diesels in between. The 1.6 CDTi 110 Ecoflex achieves over 50mpg, whilst petrol 1.4-litre models manage around 40mpg. Many engines feature timing chains, reducing maintenance costs. Trim levels range from basic Expression to the plush Elite, with popular SRi and fleet-focused Tech Line variants. Running costs are competitive, and Vauxhall's fixed-price servicing scheme covers older models, though independent garages can easily service these common, tried-and-tested vehicles.

Best for: Budget-conscious buyers seeking a practical, spacious family car with low running costs, and those prioritising value over driving dynamics.

Not ideal for: Drivers wanting engaging handling comparable to a Ford Focus, buyers concerned about reliability, or those seeking premium badge appeal like a Volkswagen Golf.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Astra if: You're budget-conscious, seeking a practical, spacious family car with low running costs, and prioritising value over driving dynamics.

Consider alternatives if: You want engaging handling comparable to a Ford Focus, are concerned about reliability, or seek premium badge appeal like a Volkswagen Golf.

Competitive Position: The Vauxhall Astra Mk6 (2010-2015) is a strong contender in the used family hatchback market, offering outstanding value and practicality. Whilst it may not match the Volkswagen Golf for premium feel or the Ford Focus for driving engagement, its significantly lower purchase price, comfortable interior, and spacious boot make it an excellent choice for budget-conscious families. The Sports Tourer estate variant provides even greater practicality. However, potential buyers should be aware of its below-average reliability record and consider this against its exceptional affordability.
