Large family cars from non-premium brands (often referred to as ‘D-segment’ models) have all but died out in the UK as SUVs have taken over, but second-hand examples – and their estate spin-offs – represent fantastic value for money. The Vauxhall Insignia Sports Tourer is absolutely one of those: a practical and spacious estate car with lots of equipment as standard that can be had for a snip of an equivalent SUV’s cost. The Ford Mondeo and Volkswagen Passat estates were its chief rivals, along with other, more minor players, such as the Mazda6 and the excellent Skoda Superb.
