Vauxhall Meriva (2010-2017) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Fantastically flexible | Rather dull to drive |
| Innovative rear-hinged rear doors | Entry-level cars are poorly equipped and underpowered |
| Economical diesel engines | Not the most stylish car to look at |
Quick Summary
The Vauxhall Meriva (2010-2017) is a compact MPV designed for maximum practicality, sharing its underpinnings with the Corsa. Featuring unique ‘FlexDoors’ for easy access and a versatile ‘FlexSpace’ seating system, it offers configurations from two to five seats, alongside a generous 397-litre boot. It provides ample space for four adults and achieved a five-star Euro NCAP rating at the time, making it a sensible and comfortable choice for families.
Driving is straightforward and comfortable, though some entry-level engines can feel underpowered. Running costs are generally low, particularly for the economical 1.6-litre CDTi diesel, which can achieve 50-55mpg in real-world driving. While lower trims lack standard features like air conditioning, higher specifications (Exclusiv or above) offer a better experience. The Meriva is an affordable and capable compact MPV, best suited for those prioritising interior flexibility and low running costs over driving excitement.
Best for: Drivers prioritising practicality, easy access, flexible seating, and low running costs; families needing a compact yet spacious vehicle.
Not ideal for: Buyers seeking an exciting driving experience, premium badge appeal, or a car with extensive standard equipment on all trim levels.

The Verdict
You should buy the Meriva if: You're on a budget, seeking a practical and flexible car with easy access, or needing a compact MPV for family use.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise an exciting driving experience, extensive standard equipment on all trims, or a more stylish vehicle.
Competitive Position: The Vauxhall Meriva (2010-2017) stands out in the compact MPV segment for its exceptional practicality, innovative FlexDoors, and versatile FlexSpace seating. While it may not offer the most engaging driving dynamics or lavish standard equipment on entry-level models, its affordability, low running costs, and family-friendly features make it an excellent value proposition. It’s a strong choice for budget-conscious buyers who need maximum interior flexibility from a small footprint, rivalling vehicles like the Nissan Note and Ford B-Max.

4.4 Overall rating
(23 reviews)Spacious in the cab and boot space is more than adequate. Love the glass pano roof and electric blind, makes the car feel bigger and brighter. The half leather seats look really classy and lift the interior, electronic hand brake is a nice touch. Good all round vision and a comfortable drive, a good little brother to the Zafira.
Nice family car but still compact and stylish.
The Meriva SE is a very well equipped car and in 1.4 turbo 140 guise is amply powerful enough to keep pace with motorway traffic. It will never win the traffic light Grand Prix as the gearbox is best operated in a calm and measured way between gears, which gives it a very smooth action and enables the car to make good progress. The ride is sprung toward the softer end which elicits a fair amount of body roll in corners but which is supremely smooth on all but the most rutted roads. The steering is a little vague and woolly but it was never intended to be a drivers car, more of a gentle cruiser akin to softly sprung American cars. The panoramic roof is the best feature of the car and whether raining or with a blue cloudless sky gives a wonderful feeling of space and light and I’d very comforting. The dash layout is easy to get to grips with but the location of the USB and AUX inputs is a little odd, buried beneath an oddments tray and an adjustable armrest which proved for and aft movement but no height adjustment. The individual adjustment on the rear seats is a great feature and enables a better use of the interior space and for carrying a combination of passengers and oddly shaped items. Basic features like cruise control and audio controls on the steering wheel are accessible and easy to use. My car came with a small spare wheel which is preferable to a compressor and can of sealant which often doesn’t work in my experience. Overall, a good medium sized family car able to carry 4 adults with ease and a reasonable sized boot for shopping and luggage. Good performance from a willing 140 BHP engine coupled with a leisurely gear change which reflects the overall mood of the car. Quiet, easy going and willing.
This is a family sized hatchback, with plenty of room and boot space that gives plenty of space. A 1.4 engine that is quite economic
Excellent it was for my daughter and her dog walking business. Fab car
