Vauxhall Meriva (2010-2017) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Fantastically flexible | Rather dull to drive |
| Innovative rear-hinged rear doors | Entry-level cars are poorly equipped and underpowered |
| Economical diesel engines | Not the most stylish car to look at |
Quick Summary
The second-generation Vauxhall Meriva (2010-2017) is a compact MPV designed for maximum practicality, sharing much with the dependable Vauxhall Corsa. It excels in interior flexibility thanks to its 'FlexDoors' (rear-hinged rear doors for easy cabin access) and 'FlexSpace' seating system, allowing various configurations and a generous 397-litre boot. While not an exciting car to drive, it offers light controls, a responsive feel, and comfortable ride, achieving a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating for its time. It’s roomy enough for four adults and feels well-finished inside, despite some lower trims lacking standard air-conditioning.
Engine options range from 74bhp to 138bhp, with more powerful versions recommended to avoid sluggish performance. Running costs are generally low, particularly for the economical diesel engines, with real-world MPG figures around 50-55mpg. Petrol versions are also reasonably efficient. Many engines feature a timing chain, reducing long-term maintenance. However, automatic gearbox versions are less economical, and VED costs vary, so buyers should check specific models carefully.
Best for: Drivers prioritising practicality, families needing easy child seat access, budget-conscious buyers, and those seeking a versatile small car.
Not ideal for: Buyers looking for an exciting driving experience, standard high equipment levels on all trims, or a particularly stylish vehicle.

The Verdict
You should buy the Meriva if: You're on a budget, seeking a sensible and practical car for families, need easy access for child seats, or prioritise interior flexibility.
Consider alternatives if: You want an exciting driving experience, require air conditioning as standard on all trims, or prefer a car with more premium styling.
Competitive Position: The Vauxhall Meriva (2010-2017) carves out a strong niche in the used compact MPV market by offering exceptional practicality and flexibility at an affordable price. Its unique FlexDoors and FlexSpace system make it a standout for family use, particularly for installing child seats. While it may not match rivals for driving dynamics or standard equipment at lower trims, its low running costs, ease of maintenance, and spacious interior make it a highly sensible and capable choice for budget-conscious families.

4.4 Overall rating
(23 reviews)Spacious in the cab and boot space is more than adequate. Love the glass pano roof and electric blind, makes the car feel bigger and brighter. The half leather seats look really classy and lift the interior, electronic hand brake is a nice touch. Good all round vision and a comfortable drive, a good little brother to the Zafira.
Nice family car but still compact and stylish.
The Meriva SE is a very well equipped car and in 1.4 turbo 140 guise is amply powerful enough to keep pace with motorway traffic. It will never win the traffic light Grand Prix as the gearbox is best operated in a calm and measured way between gears, which gives it a very smooth action and enables the car to make good progress. The ride is sprung toward the softer end which elicits a fair amount of body roll in corners but which is supremely smooth on all but the most rutted roads. The steering is a little vague and woolly but it was never intended to be a drivers car, more of a gentle cruiser akin to softly sprung American cars. The panoramic roof is the best feature of the car and whether raining or with a blue cloudless sky gives a wonderful feeling of space and light and I’d very comforting. The dash layout is easy to get to grips with but the location of the USB and AUX inputs is a little odd, buried beneath an oddments tray and an adjustable armrest which proved for and aft movement but no height adjustment. The individual adjustment on the rear seats is a great feature and enables a better use of the interior space and for carrying a combination of passengers and oddly shaped items. Basic features like cruise control and audio controls on the steering wheel are accessible and easy to use. My car came with a small spare wheel which is preferable to a compressor and can of sealant which often doesn’t work in my experience. Overall, a good medium sized family car able to carry 4 adults with ease and a reasonable sized boot for shopping and luggage. Good performance from a willing 140 BHP engine coupled with a leisurely gear change which reflects the overall mood of the car. Quiet, easy going and willing.
This is a family sized hatchback, with plenty of room and boot space that gives plenty of space. A 1.4 engine that is quite economic
Excellent it was for my daughter and her dog walking business. Fab car
