Vauxhall Viva (2015-2019) Pros and Cons

Pros Cons
A very affordable used buy Many rivals are more practical
Easy to drive So-so warranty offering
Decent equipment Feels bland compared with many cars in the class

Quick Summary

The Vauxhall Viva (2015-2019) is a five-door city car offering buyers a smaller, more affordable alternative to the brand's Adam and Corsa superminis. Launched at £7,995, it competed directly with the Ford Ka+, Hyundai i10, Kia Picanto, Toyota Aygo, Skoda Citigo, and Seat Mii. Despite its diminutive size, the Viva provides room for four adults, numerous storage points, and 60/40 split-folding rear seats as standard. However, the boot is smaller than many rivals, offering just 206 litres with rear seats in place and 1,013 litres when folded.

The Viva is easy to drive with light controls, a composed ride, and safe, steady handling, though it lacks engagement. The 1.0-litre naturally aspirated three-cylinder petrol engine produces 74bhp and is quiet and smooth, but requires effort on higher-speed roads. Running costs are low, with official economy figures of 62.8mpg and CO2 emissions of 104g/km. The engine uses a timing chain, reducing maintenance costs, and servicing is required every 20,000 miles or one year. As a used prospect, the Viva offers excellent value for money, though it was discontinued in 2019.

Best for: Budget-conscious buyers seeking an affordable city car for around-town work and short trips, those prioritising low running costs and easy driveability, and buyers wanting decent equipment at a bargain price.

Not ideal for: Those needing a practical compact car for longer drives, buyers wanting premium warranty coverage, or those seeking a car with distinctive character and engaging handling.

The Verdict

You should buy the Viva if: You're budget-conscious and seeking an affordable city car for around-town work and short trips, prioritising low running costs and easy driveability, or wanting decent equipment at a bargain price.

Consider alternatives if: You need a practical compact car for longer drives, want premium warranty coverage, or seek a car with distinctive character and engaging handling.

Competitive Position: The Vauxhall Viva (2015-2019) is a sensible choice for budget-conscious buyers, offering excellent value as a used purchase. However, it faces stiff competition from more capable alternatives. The Dacia Sandero and Suzuki Celerio offer comparable or better practicality, whilst the Hyundai i10 delivers superior driving dynamics and higher user satisfaction. The Viva's main strength lies in its affordability and decent equipment levels, making it ideal for those prioritising cost over capability. For longer drives or those seeking a more engaging drive, rivals such as the Skoda Citigo offer better overall package, though at a slightly higher price point.

i bought a 2nd hand viva in april 2021. so far i am very pleased with it. cheap road tax insurance and low petrol consumption. very reliable and it has passed 4 mots with some advisories but not serious or expensive ones. mainly worn tyres that need replacing.comfortable car and well equipped.my only complaint is no cd player and the radio is not dab. the reception is rubbish very poor quality radio and i thought it would be a better one in a top of range car. 29,000 miles 0n clock when i bought it now 46,000 miles. very few problems as a whole. i would recommend buying one of these car as an economical runaround.could do with more legroom
