Vauxhall Zafira (2005-2014) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Lots of car for not much money | Reliability is a serious concern |
| Performance models are surprisingly good fun | Disappointing interior quality |
| Space for up to seven with clever and flexible seating | The Zafira Tourer is a better car, if you can stretch your budget |
Quick Summary
The Vauxhall Zafira (2005-2014), the second generation of this compact MPV, is essentially a stretched Astra with an extra row of seats crammed into the boot. It offers impressive space for passengers, particularly in the middle row, with clever Flex7 independent seven-seat flexibility that allows customisation of seating arrangements. With the third row folded, you'll have 645 litres of boot space, expanding to 1,820 litres with all rear seats flat. A facelift in 2008 brought minor visual tweaks and enhanced safety features. The Zafira prioritises comfort over driving excitement, though the sporty VXR variant provides a more engaging experience.
Engine options include 1.6, 1.8, 2.0-litre turbo, and 2.2-litre petrols, alongside 1.9-litre and later 1.7-litre CDTi diesels. The post-2007 1.6-litre petrol is the recommended choice, offering adequate performance and reasonable fuel economy. Diesels provide better MPG but carry higher repair costs. Running costs are generally low, with affordable purchase prices and inexpensive parts. However, reliability is a significant concern with this generation, making pre-purchase inspection by a trusted mechanic essential. Regular maintenance, including water pump and cambelt replacement, is crucial for longevity.
Best for: Budget-conscious buyers seeking maximum space and practicality, families needing seven seats, and those interested in the quirky VXR performance variant.
Not ideal for: Buyers prioritising reliability and interior quality, or those seeking engaging driving dynamics comparable to the Ford S-Max.

The Verdict
You should buy the Zafira if: You're on a tight budget, need maximum space and practicality for a large family, or want an affordable seven-seater with flexible seating options.
Consider alternatives if: Reliability is a priority, you value interior quality, or you seek engaging driving dynamics comparable to the Ford S-Max.
Competitive Position: The Vauxhall Zafira (2005-2014) offers exceptional value as an affordable seven-seater with clever, flexible seating and impressive practicality. However, reliability concerns and disappointing interior quality place it behind rivals like the Ford S-Max for driving enjoyment and build quality. The Zafira Tourer replacement is a superior alternative if budget allows. Despite these drawbacks, the Zafira remains an excellent choice for budget-conscious buyers prioritising space and affordability, particularly with a thorough pre-purchase inspection.

What people say
Exhaust was blown, oil was leaking from the engine and the steering column would have to be lined up a certain way to even turn the key. Not as described at all.
Excellent but was sold to a prior client disappointed it got away
