Vauxhall Zafira (2005-2014) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Lots of car for not much money	Reliability is a serious concern
Performance models are surprisingly good fun	Disappointing interior quality
Space for up to seven with clever and flexible seating	The Zafira Tourer is a better car, if you can stretch your budget

Quick Summary

The Vauxhall Zafira (2005-2014), the second generation of this compact MPV, is essentially a stretched Astra with an extra row of seats. It offers impressive space for passengers, particularly in the middle row, and features a revolutionary Flex7 independent seven-seat system that allows customisation of seating arrangements. With the third row folded down, you'll have 645 litres of boot space, expanding to a generous 1,820 litres with all rear seats flat. The 2008 facelift brought minor visual tweaks and enhanced safety equipment. It's not glamorous, but it does its job very well as an affordable people carrier for large families.

The Zafira prioritises comfort over driving excitement, though the sporty VXR model offers a more engaging experience. Engine options include 1.6, 1.8, 2.0-litre turbo, and 2.2-litre petrols, alongside 1.9-litre and later 1.7-litre CDTi diesels. The post-2007 1.6-litre petrol is recommended for its balance of efficiency and practicality. Running costs are low, with affordable servicing at independent garages. However, reliability is a significant concern, and prospective buyers should have any potential purchase thoroughly inspected by a trusted mechanic before purchase. Parts are cheap and widely available.

Best for: Budget-conscious families needing seven-seat practicality, those seeking affordable people-carrier space, and buyers interested in the quirky VXR performance variant.

Not ideal for: Those prioritising interior quality or reliability, buyers seeking driving excitement comparable to the Ford S-Max, or those unwilling to invest in a pre-purchase inspection.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Zafira if: You're on a tight budget, need seven-seat practicality for a large family, or are seeking an affordable people carrier with flexible seating options.

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise interior quality and reliability, seek superior driving dynamics, or are unwilling to invest in a thorough pre-purchase inspection.

Competitive Position: The Vauxhall Zafira (2005-2014) offers exceptional value as an affordable seven-seater with clever, flexible seating and generous space. However, reliability concerns and disappointing interior quality are significant drawbacks compared to rivals. Whilst it underperforms on expert ratings against competitors like the Skoda Citigo and Hyundai i10, its user rating remains respectable. The Zafira Tourer replacement is a better car if budget allows. For budget-conscious families prioritising practicality over premium feel, the Zafira remains a sensible choice, provided a trusted mechanic inspects any potential purchase beforehand.
