Vauxhall Zafira (2005-2014) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Lots of car for not much money	Reliability is a serious concern
Performance models are surprisingly good fun	Disappointing interior quality
Space for up to seven with clever and flexible seating	The Zafira Tourer is a better car, if you can stretch your budget

Quick Summary

The Vauxhall Zafira (2005-2014), the second generation of this compact MPV, is essentially a stretched Astra with an extra row of seats. It offers impressive space for passengers, particularly in the middle row, and features a revolutionary Flex7 independent seven-seat system that allows flexible seating configurations. With the third row folded, you'll have 645 litres of boot space, expanding to 1,820 litres with all rear seats flat. The Zafira received a facelift in 2008 with minor visual tweaks and enhanced safety equipment, competing effectively against the Citroën C4 Picasso, Ford S-Max, Volkswagen Touran, and Renault Grand Scénic.

Driving dynamics favour comfort over excitement, with a firm but manageable ride suitable for long motorway journeys. Engine options include 1.6, 1.8, and 2.0-litre turbocharged petrols, plus 1.9 and 1.7-litre CDTi diesels. The 1.6-litre petrol is recommended as the best all-rounder, offering reasonable fuel economy and lower tax. The sporty VXR variant provides an affordable performance option. However, reliability is a significant concern with this generation, making pre-purchase inspection by a trusted mechanic essential. Running costs are generally low, with affordable parts and straightforward servicing at independent garages. The interior is utilitarian with mixed-quality plastics that haven't aged particularly well.

Best for: Budget-conscious buyers seeking a spacious seven-seater, families needing flexible seating arrangements, and those wanting an affordable performance option (VXR).

Not ideal for: Buyers prioritising interior quality, those seeking driving excitement, or those unwilling to invest in a thorough pre-purchase inspection due to reliability concerns.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Zafira if: You're on a tight budget, need a spacious seven-seater with flexible seating, or want an affordable performance option (VXR).

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise interior quality, seek engaging driving dynamics, or are unwilling to invest in a thorough pre-purchase inspection due to reliability concerns.

Competitive Position: The Vauxhall Zafira (2005-2014) represents exceptional value as a spacious, practical seven-seater at an affordable price point. Its clever Flex7 seating system and generous boot space make it highly versatile for families. However, reliability issues are a significant drawback compared to rivals, requiring careful selection and inspection. Whilst the sporty VXR variant offers unique appeal, the interior quality lags behind competitors. For budget-conscious buyers willing to invest in a pre-purchase check, the Zafira delivers outstanding practicality; however, those seeking greater reliability and interior refinement should consider alternatives like the Skoda Citigo or Hyundai i10.
