Volkswagen Beetle (2011-2019) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Cheerful retro style | Very cramped in the back |
| Fuel-efficient diesel engines | Much smaller boot than the Golf on which it's based |
| Choice of hatchback and convertible models | The turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol is fast but a bit incongruous |
Quick Summary
The Volkswagen Beetle (2011-2019) is a charming, retro-styled hatchback that prioritises character and appeal over practicality. Based on the Golf platform, it offers a composed and capable driving experience with a wide range of engines, from efficient diesels to a spirited 217bhp 2.0-litre TSI. Available as both a three-door hatchback and a convertible with a nine-second folding roof, the Beetle combines cheerful styling with genuine usability for those willing to accept its compromises.
The Beetle's appeal lies in its personality rather than pragmatism. Rear legroom is tight, and the boot is significantly smaller than the Golf it's based on, making it unsuitable for families requiring maximum space. However, for buyers seeking a car that brings a smile to every journey, the Beetle delivers in abundance. Diesel engines achieve impressive real-world fuel economy in the low-to-mid 40s, whilst insurance and servicing costs remain reasonable. The convertible variant particularly excels, offering an engaging open-air driving experience with a well-insulated fabric roof.
Best for: Buyers prioritising style and character, those seeking an efficient diesel engine, and drivers interested in a convertible option with retro charm.
Not ideal for: Families needing rear space and boot capacity, those requiring modern infotainment systems, or buyers seeking autonomous safety features like adaptive cruise control.

The Verdict
You should buy the Beetle if: You prioritise style and character, seek an efficient diesel engine, or desire a convertible option with genuine retro charm and personality.
Consider alternatives if: You need rear space and boot capacity, require modern infotainment systems, or want autonomous safety features like adaptive cruise control.
Competitive Position: The Volkswagen Beetle (2011-2019) stands apart in the retro hatchback market through its unique blend of cheerful styling, efficient engines, and convertible versatility. Whilst the Fiat 500 achieves higher user ratings and the MINI offers superior expert ratings and driving dynamics, the Beetle delivers exceptional value with the highest percentage of good and great deals available. Its Golf-based platform ensures composed handling and reasonable running costs, making it an excellent choice for buyers seeking character without sacrificing practicality. The convertible variant particularly excels, offering an engaging alternative to its rivals.

4.4 Overall rating
(13 reviews)Having looked at many vw beetles. This particular car is exceptional in many ways, having only traveled 47,000 miles in its 16 year life and has complimentary bodywork. No other car ( perhaps Fiat) could compare to a Beetle.
Lovely looking car. Drives nice. Very comfortable. Missing Bluetooth.
The car at quick glance looks lovely but it’s still showing signs of the previous accident
Value for money. Good friendly service. No hard sell.
It is good value and I would recommend to people
