Volkswagen Beetle (2011-2019) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Cheerful retro style | Very cramped in the back |
| Fuel-efficient diesel engines | Much smaller boot than the Golf on which it's based |
| Choice of hatchback and convertible models | The turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol is fast but a bit incongruous |
Quick Summary
The Volkswagen Beetle (2011-2019), also known as the A5, is a retro-styled compact car built on the capable underpinnings of the VW Golf. Available as both a hatchback and a cabriolet, it prioritises distinctive character and iconic looks over outright practicality. While it offers more rear space than some direct rivals like the MINI and Fiat 500, it remains a strict four-seater with a relatively narrow 310-litre boot. Its driving dynamics are composed and capable, similar to the Golf, making it a relaxing car for longer journeys, though it lacks the exciting engagement of some competitors.
Engine options include efficient diesels and capable petrol units, leading to generally sensible running costs. Standard equipment is basic, requiring a step up in trim for features like alloy wheels. The infotainment system is somewhat dated, and modern safety technologies such as autonomous emergency braking were never offered. Despite these compromises in practicality and technology, the Beetle's unique charm and feel-good factor make it a cheerful and appealing alternative for those who value character and a retro aesthetic.
Best for: Drivers who prioritise distinctive retro styling and character, those seeking a composed and capable daily driver, or buyers looking for sensible running costs.
Not ideal for: Buyers needing maximum practicality (rear passenger space, large boot), cutting-edge infotainment and safety technology, or a truly exciting, driver-focused experience.

The Verdict
You should buy the Beetle if: You prioritise distinctive retro styling and character, seek a composed and capable daily driver, or are looking for sensible running costs.
Consider alternatives if: You need maximum practicality (rear passenger space, large boot), cutting-edge infotainment and safety technology, or a truly exciting, driver-focused experience.
Competitive Position: The Volkswagen Beetle (2011-2019) stands out in the compact car market for its unique and cheerful retro styling, offering a distinct alternative to more conventional rivals. While based on the capable VW Golf, it makes compromises in practicality and modern tech for its aesthetic appeal. Its composed driving dynamics and sensible running costs make it a charming choice for those who value character and a feel-good factor over outright space or cutting-edge features. It competes with other retro-styled cars like the MINI and Fiat 500, often offering a bit more space than the latter.

4.4 Overall rating
(13 reviews)Having looked at many vw beetles. This particular car is exceptional in many ways, having only traveled 47,000 miles in its 16 year life and has complimentary bodywork. No other car ( perhaps Fiat) could compare to a Beetle.
Lovely looking car. Drives nice. Very comfortable. Missing Bluetooth.
The car at quick glance looks lovely but it’s still showing signs of the previous accident
Value for money. Good friendly service. No hard sell.
It is good value and I would recommend to people
