Volkswagen Beetle (2011-2019) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Cheerful retro style | Very cramped in the back |
| Fuel-efficient diesel engines | Much smaller boot than the Golf on which it's based |
| Choice of hatchback and convertible models | The turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol is fast but a bit incongruous |
Quick Summary
The Volkswagen Beetle (2011-2019) is a charming, retro-styled hatchback that prioritises character and appeal over practicality. Based on the Golf platform, it offers a composed and capable driving experience with a wide range of engines, from efficient diesels to a spirited 217bhp 2.0-litre TSI. Available as both a three-door hatchback and a convertible with a nine-second folding roof, the Beetle combines nostalgic styling with modern engineering. However, it sacrifices space for style, with a cramped rear, limited boot capacity, and three-door-only configuration that makes it less practical than its Golf cousin.
Running costs are sensible, with diesel variants achieving up to 65mpg officially (though real-world figures are lower), and petrol engines returning mid-to-late 30s mpg. Insurance and servicing are affordable thanks to its Golf underpinnings, with annual road tax at £150. The Beetle is a Marmite car—you either love its warm, friendly charm or you don't. It's ideal for those who value character and retro appeal over conventional practicality, making it a cheerful companion for everyday driving despite its compromises.
Best for: Buyers seeking a characterful, retro-styled car with decent fuel efficiency, those wanting a convertible option, and drivers who prioritise charm over practicality.
Not ideal for: Families needing rear seat space, those requiring a large boot, buyers seeking the latest technology, or drivers wanting the most practical Golf-based alternative.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Volkswagen Beetle | 3/5 | 3.7/5 | 30.1% | 3.9/5 |
| Fiat 500 | 3/5 | 4.6/5 | 42.7% | 4.2/5 |
| MINI Hatch | 4/5 | 4.6/5 | 33.5% | 4.4/5 |
| DS 3 | 3/5 | 4.6/5 | 42.0% | 4.1/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Beetle if: You value retro styling and character, seek a convertible option, want decent fuel efficiency, or prioritise charm over practicality.
Consider alternatives if: You need rear seat space, require a large boot, want the latest technology, or prefer more engaging driving dynamics.
Competitive Position: The Volkswagen Beetle (2011-2019) occupies a unique position in the retro hatchback market, offering distinctive styling and a convertible option that rivals like the Fiat 500 and DS 3 also provide. Whilst the MINI Hatch scores higher on expert ratings and overall appeal, the Beetle's Golf-based engineering ensures composed handling and sensible running costs. The Fiat 500 and DS 3 both achieve better user ratings and value scores, making them stronger propositions for budget-conscious buyers. However, the Beetle's charm, fuel-efficient diesel engines, and choice of body styles make it an appealing choice for those who prioritise character and retro appeal over outright practicality or driving excitement.

3.7 Overall rating
(3 reviews)Having looked at many vw beetles. This particular car is exceptional in many ways, having only traveled 47,000 miles in its 16 year life and has complimentary bodywork. No other car ( perhaps Fiat) could compare to a Beetle.
Lovely looking car. Drives nice. Very comfortable. Missing Bluetooth.
The car at quick glance looks lovely but it’s still showing signs of the previous accident
