Volkswagen Sharan (2010-2022) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Massively practical seven seater	Not at all trendy
Sliding rear doors for easy access	Models on sports suspension have a firmer ride
Huge boot	Reliability can be an issue in older models

Quick Summary

The Volkswagen Sharan (2010-2022) is a sensible, practical seven-seat MPV designed for families prioritising space and versatility. The second-generation model, launched in 2010, was significantly larger than its predecessor, offering considerably more interior room and improved luggage capacity. With 300 litres of boot space even with all seven seats in place, the Sharan outperforms most rivals. The innovative EasyFold seating system allows the second and third rows to fold into the floor, creating a cavernous load bay. Sliding rear doors enhance accessibility, whilst optional integrated child seats add convenience for families with young children.

Engine options include a 148bhp 1.4 TSI petrol, a more powerful 197bhp 2.0 TSI, and diesel variants ranging from 113bhp to 181bhp. The 2015 facelift brought improved infotainment, enhanced safety features, and more efficient engines. Diesel models achieve around 40-43mpg in real-world driving, whilst the petrol manages mid-30s mpg. Running costs are competitive for a seven-seater, with lower insurance groups and modest VED bills. As an MPV rather than an SUV, the Sharan represents excellent value for budget-conscious buyers seeking maximum practicality.

Best for: Families needing seven seats, those prioritising practicality and boot space, budget-conscious buyers seeking an alternative to SUVs, and drivers valuing sliding doors and flexible seating.

Not ideal for: Buyers seeking trendy styling, driving enthusiasts wanting dynamic handling, or those concerned about potential reliability issues in older models.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Sharan if: You need a practical seven-seater, prioritise space and flexibility, seek an affordable alternative to SUVs, or value sliding doors and easy access for families.

Consider alternatives if: You desire trendy styling, want engaging driving dynamics, or are concerned about potential reliability issues in older examples.

Competitive Position: The Volkswagen Sharan (2010-2022) is a strong contender in the seven-seat MPV market, offering exceptional practicality and versatile seating. Whilst the Seat Alhambra and Citroën Grand C4 Picasso score higher on user ratings and overall CarGurus ratings, the Sharan remains a sensible choice for budget-conscious families. It may lack the driving appeal of the Ford Galaxy, but its innovative EasyFold system, sliding doors, and generous boot space make it an excellent practical proposition. As MPVs have fallen from favour, the Sharan represents outstanding value compared to seven-seat SUVs, making it an astute purchase for those prioritising functionality over fashion.
