Volkswagen Sharan (2010-2022) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Massively practical seven seater | Not at all trendy |
| Sliding rear doors for easy access | Models on sports suspension have a firmer ride |
| Huge boot | Reliability can be an issue in older models |
Quick Summary
The Volkswagen Sharan (2010-2022) is the definitive sensible MPV for those who prioritise practicality above all else. A significant improvement over its predecessor, this generation is larger and roomier, featuring a clever EasyFold seating system where the rear two rows fold flat into the floor. This provides a huge, van-like load space, but even with all seven seats in use, its 300-litre boot is more generous than most rivals.
A range of TSI petrol and TDI diesel engines were offered, with post-2015 facelifted models bringing improved efficiency and updated infotainment systems. The 2.0-litre diesels are the pick of the bunch, offering a strong blend of performance and real-world economy of over 40mpg. While it doesn't offer the driving fun of a Ford S-Max, the Sharan is comfortable and capable. As a used buy, it represents excellent value compared to more fashionable seven-seat SUVs, but buyers should look for examples with a full service history.
Best for: Large families needing maximum interior space, buyers who value practicality and clever features like sliding doors, and anyone seeking a comfortable, high-value seven-seater.
Not ideal for: Drivers seeking an engaging experience (consider a Ford S-Max), style-conscious buyers, or those who want the latest in-car tech on older, pre-facelift models.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Volkswagen Sharan | 4/5 | 4.7/5 | 38.3% | 4.2/5 |
| Ford Galaxy | 5/5 | 4.5/5 | 34.0% | 4.4/5 |
| Citroen Grand C4 Picasso | 4/5 | 4.4/5 | 41.3% | 4.3/5 |

The Verdict
You should buy the Sharan if: You need a hugely practical and spacious seven-seater, and prioritise function, comfort, and value over fashion.
Consider alternatives if: You want a more engaging drive (like the Ford Galaxy) or a more stylish design (like many seven-seat SUVs).
Competitive Position: The Volkswagen Sharan is a top-tier contender in the used MPV market, excelling in practicality with its vast, flexible interior and sliding doors. It offers a more premium feel than some rivals and is often better value than seven-seat SUVs. While the closely-related SEAT Alhambra offers a similar package and the Ford Galaxy is better to drive, the Sharan’s blend of space, comfort, and VW badge appeal makes it a highly compelling and sensible choice for large families.
