Volkswagen Sharan (2010-2022) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Massively practical seven seater	Not at all trendy
Sliding rear doors for easy access	Models on sports suspension have a firmer ride
Huge boot	Reliability can be an issue in older models

Quick Summary

The Volkswagen Sharan (2010-2022) is a sensible, practical seven-seater MPV designed for families prioritising space and versatility over driving excitement. The second-generation model, introduced in 2010, marked a significant improvement over its predecessor, offering considerably more interior room and innovative EasyFold seating that folds into the floor. With 300 litres of boot space even with all seven seats upright, the Sharan provides exceptional practicality. Sliding rear doors enhance accessibility, and optional integrated child seats add convenience for families with young children.

Engine options include 1.4 and 2.0 TSI petrols alongside 2.0 TDI diesels, with the latter offering the best balance of performance and economy. Post-facelift models from 2015 feature improved infotainment, enhanced safety equipment, and better specification levels. Diesel variants achieve around 40-43mpg in real-world driving, whilst petrol models return mid-30s mpg. Running costs are generally lower than comparable SUVs, and insurance groups are competitive. Though some owners report reliability concerns with older examples, a well-maintained Sharan with full service history represents excellent value as a used seven-seater.

Best for: Families needing maximum practicality and space, those seeking an affordable seven-seater alternative to SUVs, and buyers valuing flexibility and accessibility.

Not ideal for: Driving enthusiasts seeking engaging handling, buyers prioritising trendy styling, or those with concerns about reliability in pre-facelift models.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Sharan if: You need maximum practicality and space for a large family, seek an affordable seven-seater alternative to SUVs, or value flexibility and accessibility with sliding doors and innovative seating.

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise engaging driving dynamics, trendy styling, or require absolute reliability assurance in older models.

Competitive Position: The Volkswagen Sharan (2010-2022) is a strong practical choice in the seven-seater MPV market, though it faces stiff competition. The Seat Alhambra and Ford Galaxy both score higher with experts, whilst the Citroën Grand C4 Picasso achieves a superior overall CarGurus rating of 4.4 out of 5. However, the Sharan remains an excellent value proposition, offering exceptional space, innovative seating solutions, and competitive running costs. Its sliding doors and huge boot give it practical advantages, making it ideal for families prioritising functionality over fashion. Choose the Sharan for sensible, no-nonsense family transport at a keenly priced used value.
