Volkswagen Tiguan (2024-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Brilliant for practicality and versatility	Infotainment system is way too complex
Nicely trimmed interior	Firm ride on larger alloy wheels
Good looks and desirable image	Many versions look rather expensive

Quick Summary

The Volkswagen Tiguan (2024-present) is a premium mid-size family SUV that combines generous interior space with a well-appointed cabin and desirable styling. The third-generation model offers impressive practicality with a 652-litre boot (490 litres for plug-in hybrids), comfortable seating for five, and cleverly designed rear seats that slide and recline. The minimalist cabin features a striking 12.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system as standard, with optional 15.0-inch upgrade available. Standard equipment includes climate control, LED lighting, parking sensors, reversing camera, and autonomous emergency braking across all trims.

Engine options range from two eTSI mild-hybrid petrol units (128bhp and 148bhp) to a 2.0-litre TDI diesel and plug-in hybrid eHybrid variants (201bhp and 268bhp) with around 60-70 miles of electric-only range. Whilst the entry-level petrol engine feels somewhat underwhelming, the eHybrid models offer impressive performance and efficiency for company car drivers. The ride can feel firm on larger alloy wheels, and the infotainment system, whilst visually impressive, is unnecessarily complicated. Running costs are reasonable, with official figures ranging from 45.6mpg to 52.3mpg for conventional engines, though real-world plug-in hybrid economy depends heavily on usage patterns.

Best for: Families seeking a spacious, well-equipped SUV with premium appeal, company car drivers interested in plug-in hybrid tax efficiency, and buyers prioritising practicality and interior quality.

Not ideal for: Those seeking a cosseting ride, drivers who prefer straightforward infotainment systems, or budget-conscious buyers, as many versions exceed the £40,000 luxury car surcharge threshold.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Tiguan if: You're seeking a spacious, well-equipped family SUV with premium appeal, interested in plug-in hybrid tax efficiency, or prioritising practicality and interior quality.

Consider alternatives if: You prefer a cosseting ride, want a straightforward infotainment system, or are budget-conscious, as many versions exceed the luxury car surcharge threshold.

Competitive Position: The Volkswagen Tiguan (2024-present) is a strong contender in the premium mid-size SUV segment, offering excellent practicality, a well-trimmed interior, and desirable styling. Whilst the Skoda Karoq and Kia Sportage score higher with expert reviewers and offer strong value propositions, the Tiguan's superior user ratings (4.8/5) and premium feel justify its positioning. The Volvo XC40, though more compact, appeals to those seeking Scandinavian design. The Tiguan's plug-in hybrid options and generous standard equipment make it particularly attractive for company car drivers and families prioritising space and refinement over outright value.
