Volkswagen Touareg (2018-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Luxurious to travel in	Lacks the brand appeal of a BMW or Audi SUV
Good to drive	Uses a lot of fuel
Makes for a fine tow car	No seven-seat option

Quick Summary

The Volkswagen Touareg (2018-present) is a spacious and luxurious large SUV that combines practicality with refined driving dynamics. The third-generation model, updated with a mild facelift in late-2023, offers generous interior space with reclining and sliding rear seats, and a cavernous 810-litre boot on non-hybrid models. Available with petrol, diesel, or plug-in hybrid powertrains, the Touareg delivers effortless performance and impressive nimbleness for its size. The range spans from the entry-level diesel through to the flagship Touareg R PHEV with 456bhp and around 30 miles of electric range.

Whilst the Touareg doesn't quite match the polish of premium rivals like the Audi Q7 or BMW X5, it represents excellent value as a used purchase. The lower-powered diesel engine offers the best efficiency at 34.4mpg, whilst the petrol manages 25.7mpg. As a new car, its high price makes it difficult to recommend over competitors, but on the used market it becomes far more tempting. With variable service intervals and comprehensive trim options, the Touareg is a very decent large family SUV for those seeking luxury and practicality without the premium badge premium.

Best for: Buyers seeking a spacious, luxurious SUV with strong towing capability, families needing generous interior space, and those prioritising value on the used market.

Not ideal for: Those requiring a seven-seat option, buyers seeking premium brand appeal, or those concerned about fuel consumption and running costs.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Touareg if: You're seeking a spacious, luxurious SUV with strong towing capability, need generous interior space for families, or prioritise value on the used market.

Consider alternatives if: You require a seven-seat option, seek premium brand appeal, or are concerned about fuel consumption and running costs.

Competitive Position: The Volkswagen Touareg (2018-present) is a very practical and feature-packed large SUV that drives well for its size and offers genuine luxury. However, it lacks the premium polish of rivals like the Audi Q7 or BMW X5, and the absence of a seven-seat option may disappoint some buyers. As a new car, its high price makes it difficult to recommend over premium competitors. As a used buy, however, the Touareg becomes far more compelling, offering excellent value, spacious accommodation, and refined performance. For the right price, it represents a very decent large family SUV, though comparing costs with more luxurious rivals remains advisable.
