Volkswagen Touareg (2018-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Luxurious to travel in | Lacks the brand appeal of a BMW or Audi SUV |
| Good to drive | Uses a lot of fuel |
| Makes for a fine tow car | No seven-seat option |
Quick Summary
The Volkswagen Touareg (2018-present) is Volkswagen's flagship SUV, sharing its luxurious underpinnings with premium stablemates like the Audi Q7 and Porsche Cayenne. The third-generation model, launched in 2018 and facelifted in late 2023, offers a sophisticated and spacious interior. While it doesn't offer seven seats, its boot space is cavernous, providing 810 litres in non-hybrid models and 655 litres in plug-in hybrids.
Engine options include powerful 3.0-litre V6 diesel and petrol units, alongside plug-in hybrid variants, including the flagship Touareg R with 456bhp and around 30 miles of EV range. Designed for comfort, its handling is impressive for its size, especially with the optional air suspension. Running costs can be high for petrol/diesel models (around 25-34mpg), but the Touareg makes a compelling used buy, offering luxury and features at a more accessible price point than its premium rivals.
Best for: Buyers seeking a very practical and feature-packed large family SUV, those looking for luxury pedigree without the premium badge price (especially on the used market), and drivers needing a fine tow car.
Not ideal for: Buyers prioritising seven seats, those who need exceptional fuel economy from non-PHEV models, or those who desire the ultimate brand prestige of an Audi or BMW.

The Verdict
You should buy the Touareg if: You're seeking a very practical and feature-packed large family SUV, looking for luxury pedigree without the premium badge price (especially on the used market), or needing a fine tow car.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise seven seats, need exceptional fuel economy from non-PHEV models, or desire the ultimate brand prestige of an Audi or BMW.
Competitive Position: The Volkswagen Touareg (2018-present) is a strong contender in the large SUV market, offering a luxurious, practical, and technologically advanced package. While it shares sophisticated underpinnings with premium rivals like the Audi Q7, it often comes at a more accessible price, especially on the used market. Its spacious cabin and powerful engine options make it a versatile choice, though the absence of a seven-seat option and higher running costs for non-PHEV models are considerations.

4.2 Overall rating
(8 reviews)The VW Toureg V6 has plenty of pulling power and suits my needs for towing a caravan. To be honest, you dont even know its on the back!! Ive compared like for like, with the Porsche Cayenne and the Audi Q7, they are all based on the same platform, but personally speaking, I like the look of the Toureg. The power of the V6 diesel does put a smile on your face when youre driving it.
