Volkswagen Touareg (2018-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Luxurious to travel in | Lacks the brand appeal of a BMW or Audi SUV |
| Good to drive | Uses a lot of fuel |
| Makes for a fine tow car | No seven-seat option |
Quick Summary
The Volkswagen Touareg (2018-present) is a large, luxurious SUV that sits at the top of the VW range, sharing components with premium stablemates like the Audi Q7 and Porsche Cayenne. The third-generation model, launched in 2018 and facelifted in 2023, offers a sophisticated interior and is available with petrol, diesel, and plug-in hybrid V6 powertrains, including the flagship Touareg R PHEV. It aims to provide genuine luxury pedigree within the Volkswagen brand, with various trims offering extensive standard equipment.
While it lacks a seven-seat option, the Touareg boasts massive boot space (810 litres for non-hybrids, 655 for PHEVs) and a spacious, comfortable cabin. Its V6 engines are powerful, designed for effortless and quiet cruising, with handling that is impressively nimble for its size. Running costs are not the most frugal, with diesels achieving around 34.4mpg and PHEVs around 25mpg once the battery is depleted. It represents good value as a used buy due to depreciation, making it an attractive option for those seeking a large, capable SUV.
Best for: Drivers seeking a luxurious, practical, and well-appointed large family SUV, especially those considering it as a used buy for better value, or needing a strong tow car.
Not ideal for: Buyers prioritising premium badge appeal over Volkswagen, needing a seven-seat option, or those highly concerned with fuel economy for non-PHEV models.

The Verdict
You should buy the Touareg if: You're seeking a luxurious, practical, and well-appointed large family SUV, especially if considering it as a used buy for better value, or needing a strong tow car.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise premium badge appeal over Volkswagen, need a seven-seat option, or are highly concerned with fuel economy for non-PHEV models.
Competitive Position: The Volkswagen Touareg (2018-present) offers a compelling package as a large, luxurious, and practical SUV, sharing its underpinnings with more premium brands. While it may not match the badge prestige or seven-seat capability of some rivals, its spacious interior, strong V6 engines, and impressive driving dynamics make it a strong contender. As a new car, its price can be high, but as a used purchase, it represents excellent value, making it a very decent large family SUV for the right price.

4.2 Overall rating
(8 reviews)The VW Toureg V6 has plenty of pulling power and suits my needs for towing a caravan. To be honest, you dont even know its on the back!! Ive compared like for like, with the Porsche Cayenne and the Audi Q7, they are all based on the same platform, but personally speaking, I like the look of the Toureg. The power of the V6 diesel does put a smile on your face when youre driving it.
