Reviewed a 2008 Volkswagen Touareg on 6 Aug 2023
The VW Toureg V6 has plenty of pulling power and suits my needs for towing a caravan. To be honest, you dont even know its on the back!! Ive compared like for like, with the Porsche Cayenne and the Audi Q7, they are all based on the same platform, but personally speaking, I like the look of the Toureg. The power of the V6 diesel does put a smile on your face when youre driving it.

Volkswagen Touareg (2018-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Luxurious to travel in | Lacks the brand appeal of a BMW or Audi SUV |
| Good to drive | Uses a lot of fuel |
| Makes for a fine tow car | No seven-seat option |
Quick Summary
The Volkswagen Touareg (2018-present) is a large, luxurious SUV that sits at the top of the Volkswagen range. Sharing mechanical components with the Audi Q7 and Porsche Cayenne, it offers genuine luxury pedigree at a more accessible price point. The current third-generation model, refreshed with a mild facelift in late-2023, features a spacious interior with reclining and sliding rear seats, and a cavernous 810-litre boot (655 litres in plug-in hybrid versions). Available with petrol, diesel, or plug-in hybrid powertrains, the range spans from a 3.0-litre V6 diesel to the flagship Touareg R plug-in hybrid with 456bhp and around 30 miles of EV range.
The Touareg drives well for its size, with impressively nimble handling despite its weight. Engines are designed for comfort rather than exhilaration, delivering smooth and effortless power. The entry-level diesel engine offers the best balance of torque and efficiency at 34.4mpg, whilst the petrol manages 25.7mpg. As a new car, its premium pricing makes it difficult to recommend over rivals like the Audi Q7 or BMW X5. However, as a used purchase, the Touareg represents excellent value, offering practicality, luxury, and strong towing capability at a more accessible price.
Best for: Buyers seeking a spacious, luxurious large SUV with strong towing capability, and those looking for premium features at a more accessible price point on the used market.
Not ideal for: Those prioritising premium brand appeal, requiring a seven-seat option, or seeking exceptional fuel economy.
Comparison vs Key Rivals

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Volkswagen Touareg | 3/5 | 5.0/5 | 34.4% | 4.2/5 |
| Volvo XC90 | 4/5 | 4.8/5 | 33.2% | 4.4/5 |
| Audi Q7 | 5/5 | 4.6/5 | 34.3% | 4.5/5 |
| Mercedes-Benz GLE | 4/5 | 4.8/5 | 32.9% | 4.3/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Touareg if: You're seeking a spacious, luxurious large SUV with strong towing capability, or looking for premium features at a more accessible price point on the used market.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise premium brand appeal, require a seven-seat option, or seek exceptional fuel economy.
Competitive Position: The Volkswagen Touareg (2018-present) is a very practical and feature-packed large SUV that drives well for its size and offers genuine luxury pedigree through its shared engineering with the Audi Q7 and Porsche Cayenne. Whilst it lacks the premium brand cachet of rivals like the Audi Q7 or Mercedes-Benz GLE, and doesn't offer a seven-seat configuration, it represents outstanding value on the used market. For the right price, this is a very decent large family SUV, offering spaciousness, comfort, and strong towing capability that rivals struggle to match at comparable price points.
