Volvo EX30 (2026) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Great to drive	Poor infotainment setup
Attractively priced	Boot is smaller than rivals offer
Generous standard equipment	Rear legroom could be better

Quick Summary

The Volvo EX30 is the Swedish brand's smallest electric vehicle, positioned as an affordable family car option in its electric-only range. Sitting on the SEA platform co-developed with Geely, it measures just 4.2 metres long, making it one of the smaller options in the increasingly busy £32,000–£42,000 family EV market. Two battery options are available with the single-motor P5 model: 51kWh or 69kWh Long Range lithium-ion batteries offering claimed ranges of 209 or 303 miles respectively. A more powerful twin-motor P8 AWD variant delivers impressive 0–62mph acceleration of 3.6 seconds with a 279-mile range, whilst a Cross Country version adds jacked-up suspension and rugged styling.

The EX30 excels in ride comfort and refinement, with cushy suspension that irons out poor road surfaces better than most rivals. Steering response is quick and the handling is tidy, though the car prioritises comfort over sporting pretensions. Interior materials and aesthetics are excellent, with clever centralised storage and minimalist design. However, the huge 12.3-inch touchscreen dominates the cabin ergonomically—critical vehicle systems, driver assist features and even the speedometer are buried within it, with no optional head-up display available. Rear passenger space is adequate but not exceptional, and the 318-litre boot is smaller than competitors offer. Running costs are competitive despite lacking Electric Car Grant eligibility due to Chinese manufacture.

Best for: Comfort-focused buyers seeking a tech-oriented small family EV with generous equipment, attractive pricing and excellent ride quality.

Not ideal for: Those prioritising maximum rear legroom, large boot capacity, or intuitive driver ergonomics without touchscreen reliance.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the EX30 if: You prioritise comfort and interior quality in a small family EV, value generous standard equipment and attractive pricing, and can tolerate touchscreen-centric controls.

Consider alternatives if: You require maximum rear legroom, a larger boot, or prefer traditional driver ergonomics with dedicated controls and instrument displays.

Competitive Position: The Volvo EX30 is a strong contender in the compact family EV segment, offering excellent ride comfort, refined driving dynamics and premium interior finishes at competitive pricing. Whilst rivals like the Kia EV3 provide more rear space and the Smart #1 matches it on user ratings, the EX30's superior ride quality and generous equipment justify its position. However, the frustrating touchscreen-dominated ergonomics and smaller boot capacity are notable drawbacks compared to some competitors. For buyers prioritising comfort, technology and style over practicality, the EX30 remains an excellent choice.
