Volvo EX30 (2023-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Great to drive | Poor infotainment setup |
| Attractively priced | Boot is smaller than rivals offer |
| Generous standard equipment | Rear legroom could be better |
Quick Summary
The Volvo EX30 is the Swedish brand's smallest electric car and third model to be offered exclusively as an electric vehicle. Positioned as an affordable family car option, it sits on the SEA platform co-developed with Geely Motors. At 4.2 metres long, it's one of the smaller options in the increasingly busy £32,000-£42,000 family EV market. Two battery options are available with the single rear-wheel-drive motor: the 49kWh or 64kWh usable capacity lithium-ion batteries offer claimed combined ranges of 209 miles or 296 miles respectively. A Twin Motor Performance variant with the 64kWh battery delivers impressive 0-62mph acceleration of 3.6 seconds and a range of 279 miles.
The EX30 is set up to be confident and comfortable rather than sporty, with lovely cushy ride comfort that irons out poor road surfaces better than most rivals. It features a huge 12.3-inch central infotainment touchscreen with Google software built in, offering accurate battery estimates and live traffic updates. However, critical vehicle systems and driver assist features are frustratingly buried in the touchscreen, and there's no driver's readout behind the wheel or optional head-up display. Interior materials and aesthetics are excellent, with clever centralised storage and minimalist design. The 318-litre boot is smaller than some competitors, and rear legroom is adequate but not exceptional. Despite these ergonomic frustrations, the EX30 is competitively priced with generous standard equipment across all trim levels.
Best for: Buyers seeking a comfort and tech-oriented small family electric vehicle with excellent ride quality, attractive pricing, and premium interior finish.
Not ideal for: Those prioritising maximum boot space, exceptional rear passenger comfort, or intuitive driver ergonomics and infotainment accessibility.

The Verdict
You should buy the EX30 if: You're seeking a comfort and tech-oriented small family electric vehicle with excellent ride quality, attractive pricing, and premium interior finish.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise maximum boot space, exceptional rear passenger comfort, or intuitive driver ergonomics and infotainment accessibility.
Competitive Position: The Volvo EX30 is a strong contender in the compact family EV market, offering excellent ride comfort, generous standard equipment, and competitive pricing. Whilst the infotainment setup is frustratingly unintuitive and rear space is merely adequate, the EX30's premium interior finish, attractive design, and engaging driving dynamics make it a compelling choice. The Skoda Elroq offers better value and more space, whilst the Renault Megane E-Tech is also keenly priced. However, for buyers prioritising comfort, technology, and Scandinavian design, the EX30 remains an excellent option that justifies its position in the market.
