Volvo S60 (2019-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Restrained and classy design inside and out	No diesel option
Smart hybrid tech	Rear-seat space a little tight
Comfortable seats	Relatively pricey

Quick Summary

The Volvo S60 (2019-present) is a compact premium saloon that rivals the Audi A4, BMW 3 Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class. This third-generation model features a refined and upmarket exterior with a subtle, stylish interior. Built on a new Scalable Product Architecture platform, it offers improved dynamics and comes with extensive standard equipment, including a 12.3-inch driver's display, nine-inch Sensus infotainment system with satnav, dual-zone climate control, heated seats, and advanced safety features. The S60 scored the maximum five-star rating in Euro NCAP safety tests, demonstrating its commitment to occupant protection.

The S60 is available with petrol engines, including the entry-level B5 mild hybrid producing around 41.5mpg, and the T8 Twin Engine plug-in hybrid offering excellent efficiency on paper with claimed emissions as low as 40g/km. Whilst the steering is accurate and the ride generally comfortable, the S60 lacks the dynamic edge of rear-wheel-drive rivals like the BMW 3 Series or Jaguar XE. Running costs are moderate, with servicing priced reasonably for a premium saloon. However, the absence of a diesel option and relatively tight rear-seat space may deter some buyers seeking maximum practicality or efficiency.

Best for: Buyers seeking a refined, safe, and well-equipped premium saloon with elegant Scandinavian design and advanced hybrid technology, particularly those prioritising comfort and quality over outright driving dynamics.

Not ideal for: Those requiring a diesel engine, maximum rear-seat space, or drivers seeking the sharpest handling in the compact executive class.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the S60 if: You prioritise refined Scandinavian design, advanced safety features, and comfortable hybrid technology over outright driving dynamics, and seek a well-equipped premium saloon with excellent build quality.

Consider alternatives if: You require a diesel engine, maximum rear-seat space, the sharpest handling dynamics, or seek better value in the compact executive class.

Competitive Position: The Volvo S60 (2019-present) is a capable and refined premium saloon that competes well on design, safety, and equipment. However, it faces stiff competition from the BMW 3 Series, which outperforms it in both expert and user ratings, and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class and Audi A4, which offer comparable or superior value propositions. Whilst the S60's elegant design and hybrid technology are appealing, its lack of a diesel option, tighter rear-seat space, and less dynamic handling mean it remains an alternative choice rather than the class benchmark. For those valuing refinement and Scandinavian design over outright performance or practicality, it remains a worthy consideration.
