Volvo V40 (2012-2019) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Interesting alternative to Audi A3 or BMW 1 Series | Cramped interior and poor luggage capacity |
| Fuel-efficient diesel models | Not great to drive |
| Impressive safety equipment | No hybrid or electric option |
Quick Summary
The Volvo V40 (2012-2019) is a premium five-door family hatchback designed to compete with German rivals like the Audi A3 and BMW 1 Series. It offers an upmarket interior, smart styling, and a reputation for class-leading safety. Available in various trims, including the sporty R-Design and rugged Cross Country, the range was updated with a facelift in 2016. However, its practicality is compromised, with a relatively small 335-litre boot and cramped rear seats that can feel claustrophobic due to the narrow windows.
The driving experience is safe and reassuring rather than fun, lacking the dynamic edge of a Ford Focus. The engine range is broad, from thirsty but powerful T5 petrol models to the extremely economical D2 diesel, which can achieve over 60mpg in real-world driving. Running costs can be higher than mainstream alternatives, with servicing prices closer to premium brands. All engines use a timing belt, which will require periodic replacement, adding to long-term maintenance costs.
Best for: Safety-conscious buyers, those wanting a stylish, premium-feeling cabin, and drivers seeking excellent fuel economy from diesel models.
Not ideal for: Buyers needing maximum interior and boot space, those who prioritise a fun driving experience, or anyone looking for a hybrid model.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Volvo V40 | 3/5 | 4.6/5 | 35.7% | 4.1/5 |
| BMW 1 Series | 4/5 | 4.2/5 | 40.2% | 4.4/5 |
| Audi A3 | 4/5 | 4.4/5 | 34.4% | 4.4/5 |
| Volkswagen Golf | 4/5 | 4.7/5 | 31.9% | 4.4/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the V40 if: You prioritise safety above all else, appreciate a stylish and premium-feeling interior, and want the low running costs offered by the frugal diesel engines.
Consider alternatives if: You need generous rear-seat space and boot capacity for your family, or if you want a car that provides an engaging and fun driving experience.
Competitive Position: The Volvo V40 is a compelling used choice for those seeking a safe and stylish premium hatchback. It trades the practicality and all-round talent of a Volkswagen Golf for a more distinctive design and a class-leading safety focus. While not as sharp to drive as a BMW 1 Series, its comfortable cabin and efficient engines make it a strong contender against its German rivals.

4.6 Overall rating
(21 reviews)Customers say
The Volvo V40, particularly the 2019 model, is appreciated by owners for its stylish design and extensive features, making it a visually appealing option. However, there are concerns about reliability, specifically with clutches, which can be expensive to fix. While many find the value to be good, its discontinuation raises some doubts. Overall, drivers enjoy how it looks and the driving experience, but some aspects of usability, like the navigation system and controls, received criticism.

What people say
Smart and beautifully fitted out inside. Built like the proverbial tank with loads of luxury extras.
I had 2 Volvo s60s wanted a v40 as my next car just couldn’t afford one. The layout is nearly same as s60. The v40 is good value at the right price.
The car has lots of features including privacy glass, parking camera, front and rear parking sensors, rear parking sensors, climate control, air con, sat nav, bluetooth, DAB radio, virtual cockpit dash, cruise control, full leather seats, electric front seats, keyless start and start-stop. It has 26644 miles on the clock and was sold at a competitive price.
Car is great, it got more or less everything I wanted in the car. My only concern is car was discontinued in 2019. But I guess you cant have everything.
Sad about the V40, love the design but reports of dodgy clutches, costing over £1000 to fix (10% of the cost of a decent used V40) have turned me off them.
